OB said his oldest mum conceived naturally at 47

Catherine McDiarmid-Watt | Sunday, January 27, 2008 | 2 comments

My OB [obstetrician] said his oldest mum who conceived naturally, and with a problem free pregnancy, was 47. He has had a few mums in their 40's so he is very hopeful.

I also want to say I have a cousin who got pregnant naturally, at age 45, and delivered a healthy baby girl at age 46. Good luck.

I found out that I was pregnant when I was 43. I turned 44 and gave birth to a beautiful, healthy little boy in November. The pregnancy was just about like the other ones, and the delivery was uneventful.

I did have an amnio which eased my fears a lot. He was totally unplanned and I was in shock, denial, and depression for a good while. Now that he is here, I love him dearly.

I am also the child of an older mom. My mom was 36 when she had me, and my husband is the son of a 44 year old mother. So it can be a good thing!

However, I just had to share what my new OB/GYN told me last week. I told her that we’re still TTC [trying to conceive] at 46 and I expected her to say something discouraging, but, lo and behold, she said that just a couple of weeks ago one of her patients delivered healthy twins at ….drum roll….54!

When I asked if they were donor eggs, she said they weren’t and that this woman had her first baby at 45, still had regular periods and just kept trying. If that isn’t encouraging, I don’t know what is. She told me take folic acid, and keep at it.

So, take heart, fellow 45+ TTCers. You just never know!

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost our precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted there will be no more babies in our house.

  1. I always heard that late pregnancy increases chance of unhealthy child, but i guess everyone should ask their own Obstetrician and Gynecologist, everyones different after all.

  2. Frances says:

    Hello my name is Frances
My husband and I thought to ourselves well our children are grown now 26 and 27, and that our nana and poppa time with our four grandchildren had arrived.

Then surprise, surprise I became pregnant and gave birth to a healthy 9lb baby boy.

Baby was conceived and born naturally.

I missed the chromosone testing because I was five and ahalf months into the pregnancy and most of the advice I recieved from the experts was doom and gloom... the statistics state this and the statistics state that, which was the last thing I wanted to hear.

They had me in hospital 10 days before baby was due with the intention of inducing me because I was told statistics state in older women etc, the placenta can stop.

Five days before baby's due date they induced me three times, it was unsuccessful, and by this stage I had enough; in my mind I just wanted to go home and allow baby to come when he was ready just like my other children.

Baby was born 10 November 2008. He is beautiful healthy and has just turned 2yrs. His big brother 29 and sister 28 keep him company with his nieces 7,6 and 4yrs.

My husband and I feel very blessed and privileged to have been given another son, God is good.
