MY STORY: When I met my husband, I was a divorced mom of three grown sons. We were shocked when I accidentally got pregnant at 49 years old, while using a cervical cap as birth control. We lost our precious baby at 8 weeks, so my husband (who has had no children of his own) and I decided to try again. After all, my great-grandmother had five children after 40 years of age! In our attempt to achieve a successful pregnancy, we used the following products:
I took my temperature with a BD Basal thermometer every morning, I used ovulation sticks to see when I was ovulating, as well as the Fertile Focus Microscope to monitor my saliva for ferning. I used the free charting offered at FertilityFriend.com to help pinpoint my fertile days. Both my husband and I took Maca and I took Vitex three times a day, I used bio-identical progesterone and estrogen cream and we both took a ton of herbs and vitamins!
When I suspected a pregnancy, I tested with home pregnancy tests. My husband had sperm checks and I had all sorts of fertility and FSH testing and natural cycles with the RE doctor [Reproductive Endocrinologist]. Despite our ages, our results were perfect!
Even without the doctors' help, I was able to get spontaneously pregnant a total of six times between ages 49 to 53, a surprising accomplishment for my age! Unfortunately though, we were not able to achieve a successful pregnancy before menopause arrived.
As well as the higher incidence of miscarriage at my age, my inability to carry may have been because my body does not carry well, having lost 5 babies who share my soul between ages 18 to 33. A total of 11 miscarriages. After many tests, no answer for my losses was ever found.
At first they told me I was too young, in my 30's it was "just bad luck", and now they just say it's old age. I feel so fortunate to have had three successful (although difficult) pregnancies, resulting in three grown sons who share my heart and my life.
I have to be honest here - this journey is not for the faint-of-heart. Not everyone will have a happy ending. We were turned down for donor egg due to my losses, turned down by the top fertility specialists, foster care and adoption due to my age. I had so hoped to give my husband a child, but it did not happen for us.
I wish you success with your fertility journey!
