After almost three decades of marriage, spent in the harrowing embrace of barrenness, and with three husbands, 52-year-old Alhaja Owolabi Kareem against all odds and human expectations not only got pregnant but also gave birth to a bouncing baby girl.

For the couple, Alhaji and Alhaja Owolabi Kareem of Ajah in the Eti Osa Local Government Area Lagos State, November 26, 2010, will forever be remembered as a day of celebration of miracles.

It was the day on which the 52-year-old Alhaja Owolabi Kareem put to bed a bouncing baby girl. It was the first in her life.

Like most women of her age, Alhaja Ajah as she is fondly called by her fellow members at the Saints Gospel Church of Christ Hand of Fire, Ago along Igando-Ikotun Road, Lagos had entered menopause. Some derisively call it meno-stop!

After being married for about 30 years and with no fruit to show for her conjugal labor, she had lost all hopes of ever having a baby but for her newfound faith.

Five years earlier, the 52-year-old businesswoman had been introduced to a new faith by a friend who had watched as she struggled desperately and in despair but in vain for a child.

Prior to this, it had been one long struggle filled with anguish, fears, tears, humiliation and even desperation.

According to Alhaja, she had visited all known hospitals and medical practitioners both orthodox and unconventional, local and foreign all to no avail.

It was after she had reached menopause and lost hope, she decided to heed her friend's advice of seeking further spiritual help at a particular worship center where she worships currently.
by Randine Lewis

-- Infertility affects one out of six couples today.

Dr. Lewis presents a groundbreaking alternative approach to infertility, explaining how she used traditional Chinese medicine to treat her own infertility, successfully conceiving and giving birth to two children.

In Lewis's experience, women who have undergone three to six months of the dietary changes, herbs and acupuncture treatments become pregnant with no further effort.

Lewis intersperses her somewhat technical examination of the program with anecdotes about her patients, weaving in discussions on diet, herbal supplements, acupuncture, older women and problems related to infertility.

I was still in my 20s (29 years old), when I duly brought forth my son Charlie, now 23 years old.

Two years and three months after my first baby - and by now in my early 30s - I gave birth to Alice, who will be 21 years old this month.

Soon after this, my marriage broke down, and I settled into almost a decade of raising my small family as a single parent.

And then, shortly before my 44th birthday, my second husband and I celebrated the arrival of Isabel, who has just turned nine years old.

I am, in spite of my mother's misgivings, the proud mother of three children, each born in a different decade of my life.
How Unexplained Infertility, Miscarriage and IVF Failure Can Be Explained and Treated with Immunotherapy
by Alan E. Beer, Julia Kantecki, Jane Reed

-- A unique book—the first of its kind. No longer do patients have to accept their infertility is just bad luck and they just have to keep on trying.

No longer should women with recurrent miscarriages have to listen to their doctor telling them that their loss was God's will or that they ought to be thankful because their baby was probably chromosomal-ly abnormal.

The statistics simply do not support such claims — in fact, they show repeated reproductive failure can be a symptom of wider health problems in the mother.

Furthermore, the root cause can be treated — not only to promote the chances of a successful pregnancy but to improve the mother's health long-term.
by Rachel Dratch

-- Her career at a low point, Rachel Dratch suddenly had time for yoga, dog-sitting, learning Spanish - and dating. After all, what did a forty-something single woman living in New York have to lose?

Resigned to childlessness but still hoping for romance, Dratch was out for drinks with a friend when she met John.

Handsome and funny, after only six months of dating long-distance, he became the inadvertent father of her wholly unplanned, undreamed-of child, and moved to New York to be a dad.

With riotous humor, Dratch recounts breaking the news to her bewildered parents, the awe of her single friends, and the awkwardness of a baby-care class where the instructor kept tossing out the f-word.

Filled with great behind-the-scenes anecdotes from Dratch's time on SNL, Girl Walks into a Bar is a refreshing version of the happily ever after story that proves female comics - like bestsellers Tina Fey and Chelsea Handler - are truly having their moment.
Lori Riner is a mom again — at age 48.

The Sparta woman gave birth Friday to a boy and became the oldest woman to deliver at Franciscan Skemp Medical Center - without the aid of fertility treatment.

Lori's 12-year-old granddaughter named the baby Tucker.

At first, Lori thought she was going through menopause.

But, she said, menopause doesn't kick.

She asked her husband, Sonny, to sit down when she broke the news about the pregnancy.

Of course, I was shocked, Sonny said. But I was happy. Most couples would be devastated, but we were not devastated.

The couple has been married four years, and have children from previous marriages in their 20s and 30s, in addition to their granddaughter.

The intense debate surrounding a very touchy subject.

In a fascinating article that recently appeared in New York Magazine, writer Lisa Miller outlines and ultimately defends the current boom of men and women becoming parents at age 50 and beyond.

The article begins with an anecdote - a couple meets and falls in love when she's 47 years old, and he's 54 years old.

Through a donor egg and her husband's sperm, the woman gives birth to her first daughter at age 50.

Two years later, she attempts to get pregnant again.

This time, she has to be brought out of menopause with hormones before she is able to become pregnant.

Shortly thereafter, she gives birth to her second daughter.

This anecdote is only one of many, and they're on the rise. Birth rates among women ages 45 to 49 have risen 17% in just the past three years alone. Reproductive technology, of course, accounts for this sharp increase.
I would think that the correlation probably has more to do with good genes.
Good genes are more likely to lead to fertility at a later age and a longer life span.
I had heartache and pregnancy loss, but I finally got pregnant and had a healthy baby at 45 years old.
I was very lucky at 44 years old to get pregnant two out of four IUI [Intrauterine insemination] cycles, but you could be too.

The odds of my conceiving were 3% according to medical science, yet I got pregnant over 40 years old - two out of four tries.
Max, a chubby-cheeked, eight-pound boy with a shock of strawberry blond hair, arrived on a crisp November afternoon.

Just shy of nine months earlier, 45-year-old Daryl Peddar had given motherhood one final chance.

For the past six years, Peddar and her husband, Andrew, had been struggling to start a family.

They had gone through five failed rounds of assisted reproduction, two painful pregnancy losses and at one point, given up altogether.

It is very disheartening when nothing seems to be working. We had basically decided this was the last time we would try for a baby, Peddar said of their final attempt through in vitro fertilization (IVF).

We thought, if it did not work, then it was obviously not meant to be.

-- A survey, undertaken specially for this book, shows that 40% of women earning $50,000 or more a year are childless at age 45.

So why is the age-old business of having babies so very elusive for this generation of high-achieving women?

Why is it that all the new power and prestige do not translate into easier choices on the family front?

It seems that women can be astronauts, CEOs, Secretaries of State, but increasingly, they cannot be mothers.

Sylvia Hewlett's powerful book looks at the hard and disturbing facts and goes on to advocate a new way of approaching the question of motherhood vs. career for a new generation of women.
A quadruplet pregnancy occurred in a woman 51 years of age following oocyte donation and embryo transfer.

Successful pregnancy occurred following two previously unsuccessful attempts.

The patient underwent a selective reduction of her pregnancy to two fetuses at approximately 13 weeks gestational age.

Her pregnancy continued uneventfully and she underwent the delivery of two viable infants at 38 weeks gestational age by Caesarean section.

This case represents the first quadruplet pregnancy to be established in a woman of 50 years of age or older.

It illustrates both the benefits and risks of oocyte donation to women of advanced reproductive age.

-- A comprehensive book for people considering parenthood through donated ova, and those supporting them.

It takes readers through the decision-making process, focusing on questions they are likely to be asking themselves, including:

Are we candidates for egg donation? Will it work?

How much does it cost? How do we find a donor?

How do we talk about our decision with others? How will we tell our children?

Ethical questions related to egg donation are also examined:

Can a donor truly have informed consent?

Is it ethically correct for donors to receive payment, and, if so, is the payment for time and effort or for their eggs?
November 10, 1992 --- DEAR ABBY:
This is for Found Love Late who wonders if she's too old to have a child in her mid-40s:

I was 45 and my husband was 50 when I became pregnant. We had been childless for 22 years and it was a great shock, to put it mildly. My doctor assured me that my age was no problem because my health was excellent.

I had an uneventful and easy pregnancy and was thrilled when I delivered a beautiful baby girl.

We had some adjustments to make to our lifestyle, but we handled them well.

Chris has been the joy of my life. She is 32 years old now, happily married and has given me four beautiful grandchildren.

I am now a widow - 78 years young.

Is it fair for a child to have a menopausal mom? I will let my daughter answer that question. I'm enclosing her letter...

DEAR ABBY: My mother gave me an assignment I am accepting happily.

She asked me what it was like having a menopausal mother. I never knew I had one. I suppose most kids think their parents are "old" - but I never thought mine was any older than the rest.

In fact, I always thought my parents were pretty cool - especially my mom. She was always up on the latest fashions, styles, and trends, and she dressed accordingly. (She still does.)

My mom is my best friend. We talk on the phone every day and get together at least once a week to go shopping. She can run circles around me. I have to ask her to stop so I can rest.

I want to tell those women who found love late and had children later than most women:

Don't worry about looking like a grandmother at PTA meetings. You will see women of all ages, shapes, sizes, and colors there. Lots of moms are
also grandmothers from their older children. Besides, with today's lifestyles, many children are being raised by their grandparents, so I
doubt that you will be the oldest mother there.

But most of all, please don't worry about what your children might think about having an older mom. I had one, and it never even crossed my mind at the time. I had the most wonderful childhood a kid could have, and the best parents in the world and your children will probably think the same.

MAY 2010 - A 54-year-old Italian woman has amazed doctors and herself by falling pregnant naturally.

Hospital worker Giovanni Ciardi is one of only a handful of women to have become pregnant without medical treatment in their 50s.

Doctors have described her as an exceptional case.

Mrs. Ciardi is 15 weeks pregnant.

She is due to give birth to a girl in November - by which time she will be 55 years old.

She already has a 23-year-old daughter called Veronica through her first marriage.

Mrs Ciardi said: Back in January I missed a period and I thought well my menopause must have arrived but when I began to feel nausea and have an upset tummy I went to the doctor.

He just smiled and said: "Your symptoms have nothing to do with the menopause - you're pregnant.
by Rachel Dratch

Baby can wait

Fran Watson gave birth to Angus when she was 43 years old, having waited 20 years to find the right partner, get married and then have a child.

What I feel like a mom who waited a long time is 'My God, I'm happy,' said the longtime publicist.

And what can possibly be wrong with that wonderful feeling?

A fitness professional in Calgary, Helen Vanderburg said she delayed having children mostly because she wasn't in a committed relationship until she was older; building her career played a secondary role.

She underwent a full complement of testing to rule out any genetic abnormalities and, at 45 years old, gave birth to her daughter, Sage.

My sister in law just told me a woman who goes to her church got pregnant at 46 years old -- completely unplanned -- and delivered her beautiful and healthy baby a week ago!

No one even knew she was pregnant for the longest time.

I guess she and her husband were kind of embarrassed (they already have two children, the youngest who is 20!) and didn't really mention it until the last couple of months when she got really big.

I, of course, asked my sister in law the same question I always ask about women that age -- did this woman do in vitro or anything?

My sister-in-law laughed, and said, Are you kidding? They thought she was going through menopause, and she didn't realize she was pregnant till she started feeling the signs -- again, which she attributed to menopause -- and her doctor confirmed it.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

This is for every woman who wants a baby and isn't sure if it's even possible, every woman who might be pregnant now and not sure if she wants a baby and every woman who just isn't sure she will have the energy and strength to raise a baby after 40.

My grandmother had 12 children between 1932 and 1957. Her last was at age 45. Every one of them was healthy, uncomplicated births.

Most were born at home with a midwife or the local country doctor attending.

After being blessed as she was with the births of all these babies, came the raising of them.

My grandmother worked from morning 'til night taking care of her home and family.

She never complained. She always said she had a good life and felt blessed.

So just remember women are AMAZING. Each and every one of us.

We have an inner strength sometimes we don't even realize we have.

It's okay to be sad and blue sometimes, it's only natural, but never give up having hope and faith whatever we want for our lives we can make come true and whatever life throws at us we'll be able to handle.
January 13 2009 - French President Nicolas Sarkozy's unmarried Justice Minister Rachida Dati gives birth to a baby girl on Friday January 2, according to reports.

It was unknown who fathered Dati's child.

Smiling broadly, dressed to the nines and looking for all the world as if she had never been pregnant, 43-year-old French Justice Minister Rachida Dati returned to her high-profile job just five days after giving birth to baby Zohra.

She attended her first cabinet meeting since the birth of her daughter surrounded by a throng of television reporters and photographers.

Dati's life story of grit and determination has always fascinated the French press. One of 12 children of Algerian-Moroccan parents, who grew up in a gritty, French suburban housing project, Dati is a rare immigrant success story — and the very symbol of emancipation.
Sandy, 49, Wichita, Kansas, US
-- I find myself pregnant at 49 years old, my 50th birthday on the near horizon.

I have a son born in 1982 who is himself already the father of my 2-year-old grandson.

I have another son born in 1985. I re-married (a younger man) and had another son in 1996 after struggling with infertility.

I was surprised in 1996 to discover I was pregnant with another boy. I have joked for the past decade - I turned 40 and found out I was pregnant in the same week.

Now I find I will turn 50 pregnant. Un-planned.

Have you ever heard of such a thing?

Do 49-year-old women actually get pregnant without fertility boosts?

My periods have become less regular, but I still had them, and I know when I am ovulating.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dolores, 52, Savannah, Georgia, US
-- I am currently pregnant with IVF [in-vitro fertilization] twins
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Stacey, 44, New Jersey, US

-- My name is Stacy (first time Mom), and I naturally conceived and delivered a healthy baby boy September 2004 at 43 years of age.

I am now expecting another child April of 2006, again naturally conceived.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You know the saying 'life is full of surprises' is true!
I did have an uncle whose wife was 50/51 years old when they had their 12th child - so I can only keep hoping and praying.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Leslie, 45, Germany

-- this is my third pregnancy in one year, all naturally conceived.

The first one was terminated in August 2004; it was in the tube and the tube had to be removed.

I was devastated, as I thought there is no way to become pregnant at 43/44 years old, with only one tube left.

The first time we tried again after the operation in December 2004, I fell pregnant again.

I could hardly believe it, but sadly enough it was not OK, I lost it in the 11th week.

I just did not want to give up, even though my spirits started to be very low indeed.

All the hormones up and down really affected my body. and I gained a lot of weight.

Anyway, after the pregnancy loss and operation on 4th of March, we tried again in May - and I fell pregnant straight away.

Now I am in the 18th week, and until now it looks very good and healthy.

I can even feel the baby kick.

So I think it is just as possible to become pregnant in the forties or even late forties.

Just do not give up!
Everyone wants to talk about the twin babies born when Cheryl Tiegs was 53 years old (Date of Birth: Sept 25th, 1947) and the circumstances behind the surrogate pregnancy....

But did anyone realize she had a baby with her third husband Tony Peck? (Gregory Peck's son)....

A son named Zachary Peck was born October 1st, 1991, when Cheryl was 44 years old (just six days after her 44th birthday actually!)

So, she was blessed with being able to have a baby at 44 years old - naturally - many years before Donor Eggs were even available.
I know we live in different times, etc.
But one can only hope in the future, people in general can get over this fixation they have, with childbearing being reserved only for those 25 and under.
Something not planned.

I am worried because, as it was the holidays, I spent quite a few nights drinking alcohol and basically not taking care of myself.

I have a bad habit of drinking wine just about every other night, and worried that my behavior may have already affected the developing fetus.

Of course, I have cleaned up my act the last couple weeks.

In addition, I am plain worried about having a healthy child.

Currently I am extremely tired, with headaches and some slight spotting of blood.
I did find a Mom's Club with all ages and another mom at 43 years old, who just gave birth.

Lewis intersperses her somewhat technical examination of the program with anecdotes about her patients, weaving in discussions on diet, herbal supplements, acupuncture, older women and problems related to infertility.
by Elizabeth Gregory

-- Over the past three decades, skyrocketing numbers of women have chosen to start their families in their late thirties and early forties.

In 2005, ten times as many women had their first child between the ages of 35 and 39 as in 1975, and thirteen times as many had their first between 40 and 44.

Women now have the option to define for themselves when they're ready for family, rather than sticking to a schedule set by social convention.

As a society, however, we have yet to come to terms with the phenomenon of later motherhood, and women who decide it makes sense for them to delay pregnancy often find themselves confronted with alarmist warnings about the dangers of waiting too long.

In Ready, Elizabeth Gregory tracks the burgeoning trend of new later motherhood and demonstrates that for many women today, waiting for family works best.

She provides compelling evidence of the benefits of having children later -- by birth or by adoption.

Hi! My name is Robin, and I just found out on Saturday that I'm pregnant!

I am scared to death!

It was totally unexpected even though I was being dumb, and playing Russian Roulette.

The prescription for my birth control pill had run out a few months ago.

I called to make an appointment with my OB/GYN [obstetrician/gynecologist].

She had moved to Hawaii.

So I found a new one but wasn't able to get in until June.

I figured at my age and my history in difficulty with getting pregnant in the past, I just needed to be careful and I'd be fine. WRONG!

I don't know what I was thinking?

I am 44 years old after all, I should know better.

I have two wonderful boys from a previous marriage.

I've been seeing a wonderful man for nearly three years now.

We both felt we were too old to have children.

I dropped a bomb in the poor man's lap when I told him Saturday night.

This is the last thing either of us wanted, but we decided we would continue with the pregnancy.

I think we will both slowly get used to the idea.

I'm scared to death with all I've read about what can go wrong.

I'm looking forward to reading about all the good and positive about being pregnant at 45 years old.

I'm also looking forward to making some online friends to help each other through this exciting time in our lives.
