Catherine McDiarmid-Watt | Saturday, March 11, 2017 | 2 comments

Image: Exceptional case: Giovanni Ciardi, with partner Bruno Paoli, is pregnant at 54A 54-year-old Italian woman has amazed doctors and herself by falling pregnant naturally.

Hospital worker Giovanni Ciardi is one of only a handful of women to have become pregnant without medical treatment in their 50s.

Doctors have described her as an 'exceptional case'.

Mrs Ciardi is 15 weeks pregnant. She is due to give birth to a girl in November - by which time she will be 55 years old.

She already has a 23-year-old daughter called Veronica through her first marriage.

TODAY'S BOOK SUGGESTION:
Image: Girl Walks into a Bar . . .: Comedy Calamities, Dating Disasters, and a Midlife Miracle, by Rachel Dratch. Publisher: Gotham; 1st ed., 1st Ptg edition (March 29, 2012)Girl Walks into a Bar . . .: Comedy Calamities, Dating Disasters, and a Midlife Miracle
by Rachel Dratch

-- Her career at a low point, Rachel Dratch suddenly had time for yoga, dog- sitting, learning Spanish - and dating. After all, what did a forty-something single woman living in New York have to lose?

Resigned to childlessness but still hoping for romance, Dratch was out for drinks with a friend when she met John.

Handsome and funny, after only six months of dating long-distance, he became the inadvertent father of her wholly unplanned, undreamed-of child, and moved to New York to be a dad.

With riotous humor, Dratch recounts breaking the news to her bewildered parents, the awe of her single friends, and the awkwardness of a baby-care class where the instructor kept tossing out the f-word.

Filled with great behind-the-scenes anecdotes from Dratch's time on SNL, Girl Walks into a Bar is a refreshing version of the "happily ever after" story that proves female comics - like bestsellers Tina Fey and Chelsea Handler - are truly having their moment.

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost that precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted that there will be no more babies in our house.

I too think it is absolutly wonderful that this mom got pregnant at her age! I too am 54 and have beed trying for awhile hoping for that miracle too. I do have a 17 yr old son but have always tried for more. I have had 4 miscarriages. Two before my son and two after. Once again CONGRADULATIONS!
