I will be 56 when this baby is born

Catherine McDiarmid-Watt | Saturday, June 21, 2008 | 6 comments

Hello all, My name is Lisa, and I am 55 years old. I needed to join this board because, I really hope to be an inspiration for women trying to conceive at later ages.

Two weeks ago, I found out that I am expecting my sixth child and I am now at 8 weeks. I went in to see my doctor because I had not been feeling well. I was getting frequent headaches and lower back pain, along with some queasiness.

So I went in to make sure things were ok, and my doctor told me that I was actually expecting! I will be 56 when this baby is born, and I do plan to have a natural birth.

I have four older children ages 17, 23, 26, and 28, and I have a five year old. My five year old was actually planned. My husband and I had wanted one more little one. But I guess she was not supposed to be the last!

I also have two grandchildren. My 28 year old daughter has a four year old, and she and I were both preggo around the same time, which was pretty exciting. And my 26 year old son has a three year old. So I am a grandmother as well.

I have seen a few others on this board expecting after 50, and I hope that if anyone out there is trying to conceive at an older age, that they do not give up! And congrats to all the expectant mothers out there!

Congrats on your new found pregnancy! I am also in my fifties (54), and expecting my fourth in late July. I have a 16 year old, a 20 year old and a 26 year old.

And I too have two grandchildren! It's is always exciting to hear stories that I can relate to, and hopefully be an encouragement! I wish you luck, and I will keep you in my prayers!

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost that precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted that there will be no more babies in our house.

Congratulations, Lisa and the other Mom who is soon expecting in July!
I hope that your pregnancies and deliveries go smoothly. I've posted here before and am 51 expecting in December (26th). You two ladies have given me much encouragement. The only problem I've had during this pregnancy so far is a bladder infection which I think has cleared up now. My two sons are both grown. One is almost 25 and the oldest is 27.

Congratulations. Were you perimenoopausal at the time of conception or on hrt?

Dear Lisa, Susan, and the other lady who posted above,

My name is Holly Bryson, and I am a broadcast journalism student at the University of Leeds. I am currently working towards creating a short radio documentary about ‘older mums’ and am looking for contributors.

Do any of you live in the UK? And if so, would any of you be willing to speak to me as part of my research about your experiences of 'older motherhood'?

If you would be willing to participate, please get in touch with me at

Many thanks for your time, and best wishes,
    Holly Bryson

I gave birth to my son at 48 (am now 53) after many years of miscarriages. I love being a Mom and think that my husband and I are not always preoccupied with running around and socializing so that we really devote a lot of quality time to our sons. In terms of being older, I have been told I look about 10 years younger so the early 40's moms have no problem hanging out with me. I make special efforts to dress stylishly and not frumpily so that my son will not feel that his Mom looks like an old lady. I would not have given up this experience for anything in the world.

    Dear wonderful ladies,
I am 47, soon to be 48, and a mum to 3 children, 23 years, 22 years, and 14 years. However, after years in a very lonely marriage, I have met a man a love very dearly - and who does not have children, and I would love for us to try out for a child. However - if I do manage to conceive - there is always the fear of the risk to the baby's health, birth defects, etc. How do you get over these fears? Do you plan for a pregnancy - or just go for it with joy? I guess I am seeking emotional support for taking this step - which I so long to do... but fear is holding me back. Dear ladies - help empower me. I admire you so for your womanly strenghts and how you defy what is "the norm". Bless you xxx

  6. Congratulations! I hope that the birth went great and you have a healthy child now! This was great to read about.
