My very best friend just delivered at 45

Catherine McDiarmid-Watt | Thursday, September 20, 2007 | 0 comments

One of my very best friends just delivered Tuesday night. She's my age (just turned 45), and this is her second baby, which she conceived naturally.

She had her first at 43, also conceived naturally after miscarriages, an ectopic and failed IVF.

They also gave an award to the oldest breastfeeding mom, Rosanna Robles who at the age of 51 is still breastfeeding her 5-year old daughter. They challenged the crowd if there is an older breastfeeding mother than Robles so they can also give an award to her but she remained unbeaten.

My mother-in-law had a very successful pregnancy at 46 - unplanned and totally unexpected. She didn't even realize she was pregnant until 21 weeks and she has a healthy 7 year old son now. (My husband had been her youngest, he's 31 now)

My cousin and his wife have two kids -- the first was born when she was 38-39 and the second when she was 42-43.

And my paternal grandmother had two of her seven children after she turned 40 -- one at 42 and the other at 47.

I had a co-worker who had a baby at 43-44. She's pregnant again, due in September, and will be 46 or thereabouts.

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost our precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted there will be no more babies in our house.
