Among women over 40, the success rate is about 40%. Among those 45-49 in the United States, the births have tripled (from 1,638 to 4,174) from 1990 to 1999.

One hundred and seventy four women age 50-54 gave birth in 1999, up from 144 two years earlier.

According to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, from 2002 to 2003, the number of American women ages 50 to 54 who delivered children jumped to 323 from 263.

In Indiana, 46 children were born in 2002 to women 45 and older. How many of those mothers were 50 or older was unknown.

Examine your programming about age.

Do you honestly feel it is possible for you to get pregnant, or do you feel you are “too old”? Remember, in the last 50 years, births to women over the age of 40 have increased 50 percent.

In cultures where women have not been told that their eggs are too old, they are often able to conceive in their fifties and even in their sixties. The Huichol Indians of Mexico are such a culture.

I think I have finally found the Doctor for me. Don't have time to write much now, but just wanted to share with you all that she told me proudly that she delivered the baby of a 47 year old patient recently. This woman had been trying for about 5 years. It was natural. She had more or less given up.

The fact that the Doctor was so pleased with this story made me feel she will be supportive of my TTC journey.

Catherine

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost our precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted there will be no more babies in our house.
