I'm 44y & 16w pregnant with my 1st child

Catherine McDiarmid-Watt | Sunday, August 05, 2007 | 0 comments

From Debby: I am 44 years old and pregnant with my first child after 3 miscarriages and 3 IVF attempts. I am at the 16th week and praying.

A 54 year old woman presents with a 2 month history of amenorrhea. She has a beta HCG level of approximately 200,000 units. [She was pregnant!]

From Elizzabeth: I had a gastric bypass and have lost 129 lbs so far. It's almost 8 months since the surgery, and I just found out that I am pregnant. I am 44 years old, with a 15 and 6 year old.

From Elza: I had my first child at age 42.5 and am now expecting our 2nd which will be due after I turn 46. My first pregnancy went very well and I went the full 9 months to the day - labour 12 hours and a healthy 10.5 pound baby boy. I'm hoping that if I follow the same guidelines I did last time, I will have another healthy baby.

Technically, any woman who has not gone through menopause, and who does not have other reproductive problems, can become pregnant. Successful pregnancies have been reported in women as old as 59.

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost our precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted there will be no more babies in our house.
