Pregnant at 46 - I found out that I was pregnant

Catherine McDiarmid-Watt | Sunday, February 04, 2007 | 1 comments

Pregnant at 46 - I found out that I was pregnant 4 days ago, and am still in shock. I went off the pill to get a check for menopause... I guess I failed the menopause test. I am scared to death, I have 3 children 17, 14, and 11..... I am trying to get over the shock. I wondered how common it is to become pregnant at 46 and what to expect from a pregnancy at this time in my life?

According to Guinness World Records 2001, the highest officially recorded number of children born to one mother is 69, to the first wife of Feodor Vassilyev (1707-1782) of Shuya, Russia. Between 1725 and 1765 [18-58y old], in a total of 27 confinements, she gave birth to 16 pairs of twins, seven sets of triplets, and four sets of quadruplets. 67 of them survived infancy.

This is one of the reasons of increasing amount of twins’ birth – a worldwide tendency to late deliveries. A probability of birth of two and more babies increases, if a mother is older than 35 years. (By the way, this chance increases even more after 50 years).

The matter is that with age, ovulations take place not during each cycle – and this is quite normal. As a result, free hormones, affecting ovulation, accumulate and release during the following cycle, stimulating coming out of several ovules at once.

In 1999 however, twin birth rates rose steadily with maternal age and were highest for women aged 50-54 years. Since 1990, the twin birth rate has risen 80 percent among women 40-44 years of age (from 24.7 to 44.5 per 1,000), and almost 600 percent among women aged 45-49 years (from 23.8 to 155.7), compared to only a 6 percent rise for women under age 20 years (14.3 to 15.2).

Comparable trend data are not available for women aged 50-54 years, but in 1999 more than a third of births (34 percent) to women in the oldest age group were born in a twin delivery.

Oldest Mother of Twins - 58-years-old Samira Ellis of Israel had twins Elias and Solva on March 8, 2003

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost that precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted that there will be no more babies in our house.

    Hi there,
What a blessing to be pregnant at 46 years old. So many women pray that they could be in your shoes. I was recently pregnant with twins and miscarried. We will try again and hope for another miracle. T
