Environment, hormones in meats etc certainly all play a role. But the reality is women then and now do have babies naturally in their 40's.

My neighbour's housekeeper is 45 and had several miscarriages -- no live births. She's pregnant and is now about 25 weeks with a good amnio. She definitely does not have the money for donor egg.

A 47- year old woman in my yoga class had twins naturally after being remarried, her new husband not having any kids. She has a teenage daughter from her previous marriage.

A friend of mine works for a university and a professor there spoken to me about FSH and fertility. He seems to think that a lot of the time its due to poor results with high FSH that stops fertility clinics working with people over the age of 40 with high FSH.

He says that until your periods stop completely for twelve months you can get pregnant and once pregnant the chances of miscarriage are the same as any 40 year old with or without high FSH. He says that when FSH is high it stops you falling pregnant but this changes from month to month so on a lower FSH month that is when you can fall.

My grandmother gave birth to my mother while she was in her 40's. My mother was not the youngest child. All we can do is pray that we have a healthy and happy baby. The rest is in Gods hands.

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost our precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted there will be no more babies in our house.
