We had our 1st baby when we were nearly 47

Catherine McDiarmid-Watt | Thursday, May 11, 2006 | 0 comments

After 25 years of marriage, my husband and I had our first baby when we were nearly 47. We both feel we make better parents now than we would if we had our daughter at a more traditional age. Insurance actuaries now say it is likely people our age will live into our 100's, which gives us hope that we will be there for our daughter.

I have an older friend who had her last child at 45 back when there wasn't a lot you could do to prevent pregnancy.

I had my first child at 25 and my fourth child at 47. I loved my last pregnancy and everything went well and I now have a very active, healthy 2 year old. Chronological age isn't a factor as much as the mother's health. I just ran a half-marathon in December at 49 and loved it and my 2 yr old trained with me in the jogging stroller!

Well, I think it is a great idea. My mom was 48 and my dad was 51 [when I was born]. I am now 27 and they are 75 and 77. My parents doesn’t act like they are in their 70's nor do they look like it. I believe I have kept them young and going.

I was 43 and my husband 44 when we had our first child. He was one of those "miracle babies" that I was always told I would never have, at least without expensive intervention. We tried that for a while when I was younger and then accepted our lot. In the mean time, we grew up, saw the world and got our priorities in place. Then our son came along, probably because of a hormone shift due to peri-menopause.

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost our precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted there will be no more babies in our house.
