Pregnant at 50, delivered healthy baby at 51

Catherine McDiarmid-Watt | Wednesday, May 10, 2006 | 0 comments

I think that as a mother who became pregnant at 50 and delivered a healthy baby girl at age 51, that I can contribute a viewpoint from someone who is actually doing and living this. First of all, I have no trouble keeping up with my 3 ½ year old daughter and she was planned and wanted.

I have a friend whose mom was 49 & dad was 60 when she was born

At age 45, after 20 years of marriage, I had a baby. We had not planned it. Was it the ideal time -- hmmm -- when is the ideal time, anyway? Well, for us anyway, it turned out it was. I followed doctor's orders, ate organic and whole grain foods whenever I could, and we beat the odds. Our son was born healthy and beautiful.

My grandmother unexpectedly fell pregnant with my uncle (after 6 children) when she was 48 and my grandfather was 49.

I became a mother for the third time at 43 (almost 44) and my child is a blessing to our family.

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost our precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted there will be no more babies in our house.
