Rachel of Toronto, is also an "older" mother. She's now 56 and married to a man 10 years younger. She had her first child with him at age 44 and her second at 49. "My first relationship was long-term and childless, and when it broke up I knew I wanted children," says the pretty blond who looks at least 15 years younger and who married at 44 for the first time.

As for needing help at 42, that is not really true. I am a prime example. My mother was 45 when I was born. It is not that uncommon to hear of people years ago who were late in life babies. I can think of 5 that I know in our little town that would fit that description.

That's right, a healthy child was born to 44 year old Mrs M… in 1997, five years after she had a sterilization procedure. She sued, claiming the doctor was negligent because he failed to warn her that the risk that she might become pregnant was higher than the normal 1 in 300 after this kind of sterilisation.

My grandmother gave birth to my aunt when she was 50 years old, without the aid of any type of fertility drugs.

I'm 46, soon to be 47. I had my first and only child at 44. I have more energy than most of the 30 year old Moms that I know. I think it's all about the woman. Not the age.

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost our precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted there will be no more babies in our house.
