About 4 out of 5 pregnancies in older women conceived naturally

Catherine McDiarmid-Watt | Monday, April 17, 2006 | 0 comments

Australian researchers have good news for expectant women of very advanced maternal age — that is, 45 years or older. They studied the outcomes of pregnancies progressing beyond 20 weeks' gestation in 76 women of advanced maternal age seen over a 10-year period at Brisbane’s two major tertiary obstetric units. About four in five of the pregnancies in the older women had been conceived naturally. Although the rate of caesarean section was higher in older women than younger women aged 20 to 29 years (49% v 23%), the maternal and neonatal outcomes were generally as good in the older group. The researchers said their study was reassuring for older women who are healthy and who have a chromosomally normal fetus.

I had my third homebirth in 1981 when I was 35 years old. Since then I have had 5 more births at home at the ages of 36, 38, 40, 42 and 44. My baby is now 5 months old. My labours and births have been straightforward without a complication to speak of. I have had no excessive postpartum bleeding. My midwife did not view me as a high risk for a home birth. The babies all were very healthy and strong.

Hi, I just popped in this site I've posted before on another field and yours caught my attention because I'm 43 1/2 and I'm 4 months pregnant. So far all is going well a good strong heart beat and good ultrasounds. It's all very exciting however I'm very cautious.

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost our precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted there will be no more babies in our house.
