April 10, 2009 - Broadcaster and journalist Mariella Frostrup, 46 years old, lives in west London with her husband, lawyer Jason McCue, 40, and their children, Molly, four years old, and Danny, three years old.

She is back on Radio 4 with a new series of Bringing Up Britain, which looks at how we are raising the next generation.

QUESTION: You had your first child in your 40s. How is life as an older mother?

Well, I don't know what it's like to have had a baby when you're 25 years old, so I have nothing to compare it against.

I'm sure there are advantages to it – such as having more energy.

But, then, when I was 25 years old, I wasn't ready for the responsibility of bringing up another human being.

But I don't want to be some kind of poster girl for older motherhood.

That anxiety, when you know time is not on your side and you're not sure whether you're going to have children, can be very hard to deal with.

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost our precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted there will be no more babies in our house.
