So far, the women I've cared for who delivered over age 40 have all done great — including the 49 year old who had twins! - Cynthia B. Flynn, CNM, PhD

My last doula client had her first baby at 43 years old. She was physically fit (an avid swimmer) and a very type A personality. A couple of days before her due date, my client had about a 5-hour, uncomplicated labor!

They were at home, and contractions were 5 minutes apart when they called me. They called back 10 minutes later to say that contractions were 2-3 minutes apart, and to meet them at the hospital.

When I arrived a half hour after their call, the nurse was just pulling her hand out and said, "just a lip"! The mom pushed for about 45 minutes.

I assisted at a wonderful birth of a mom having her fifth baby at 45 years old. She worked very hard to keep her nutritional status and fluid intake great, used high-quality supplements, exercised regularly, and so forth.

Of course you must trust your midwife with all your heart, and know what her skill level is to work with the special body you have been entrusted with.

I had an oops baby at 45. Had 4 others at the normal age, then when my youngest was 17 1/2 I had my 5th. Didn't show until 7 months and didn't know I was pregnant until 7 months.

My daughter found out she was pregnant with her first the same time I found out about this one. (I have 4 boys and only 1 girl) They are 6 months apart. I and am looking for any advice on "normal" people having babies at 45 years old.

I hope you read my birthday greeting to my last birth child, Maddy. I gave birth to her when I was weeks away from my 45th birthday. She is the absolute joy of my life.

My oldest daughter Samantha was pregnant with her first when I gave birth to my #8, Jonny - as well as when I announced my pregnancy with Madeleine. The aunts and uncles and nephews and niece play together all the time - it's a wonderful, rich life for them. - Barbara

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost our precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted there will be no more babies in our house.
