2nd trimester with healthy baby at 45

Catherine McDiarmid-Watt | Sunday, April 13, 2008 | 1 comments

I am not going to tell you to see Dr Toth, but I wanted to mention my friend who underwent many failed IUI/IVF [intra-uterine insemination / in vitro fertilization] cycles. She and I both think she picked up some sort of infection with all those procedures.

She started trying for a baby as soon as she got married, for a total of 3 years. A new doctor she started seeing did a hysteroscopy, and found a silent infection. He put her on Zythromax and she got pregnant, but miscarried at 8 weeks due to Turners Syndrome.

But that was the farthest she had gotten in 2 years. She then began to work on a DE [donor egg] cycle due to her age, and RE's [reproductive endocrinologist] advice. About 8 months after her miscarriage, he again put her on antibiotics to gear up. The cycle failed miserably, because the donor failed to produce any good eggs.

This was after my friend spent $20,000! Well the two cycles after the antibiotics - the one where she was waiting for the DE, and the one after were great. She got TONS of CM [cervical mucus].

Wouldn't you know, she got pregnant on that 2nd cycle, and she is now in her 2nd trimester with a healthy baby, and she is 45! This was after 3.5 years of trying. With all those procedures you never know what the cat can drag in.

My OB [obstetrician] said “I just delivered for a 47 year old woman, so I am not saying it is that critical but don’t mess around. DO NOT WASTE ANY TIME“.

I have had four pregnant patients all peri-menopausal in their forties that were having night sweats/ hot flashes when they conceived. The oldest is 45. Hope that helps. -- Del

I'm fortunate that where I live, first time parents of 40 and beyond are common. There are plenty of parents in their 50's not only playing catch, but coaching teams and running marathons.

I was talking to a friend's mother who was 80, and she said the most brilliant thing she ever did was have a baby when she was 44.

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost our precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted there will be no more babies in our house.
