Thought her childbearing years were over at 47

Catherine McDiarmid-Watt | Wednesday, December 05, 2007 | 0 comments

Marion Dressen thought her childbearing years were over. Three years ago, the 47-year old rural Minnesota woman went to an herbalist to treat the first symptoms of menopause. Instead, she got pregnant with Jack, now 2.

It was a wonderful surprise for Dressen and her husband, who were about to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary. The couple had given up trying to have a baby long ago. “After all those years, it was a bit of a shock,” Dressen said. “But we were excited at the same time.”

Dr. Nancy Kent, clinical professor at UBC's obstetrics and gynecology department, is a living example that miracles can happen. "I might be mad, but I don't regret one minute of it," Kent said of conceiving a daughter at age 47.

I know that it can happen, because my Father was born when his mother was 47 years old.

What keeps me going are the stories like Leslie's (Duckboy) — an "au natural" pregnancy for someone five years older than I am (46) !! Also Cheryl who had her daughter a few months ago at age 47 (she used TCM and acupuncture).

And my regular doctor had two patients one aged 45, and one aged 47, that had "au natural" babies last year. Also, the idea that if you are still menstruating you are still in the game!!!

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost our precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted there will be no more babies in our house.
