Anyone with a womb, ovaries & a cycle can become pregnant

Catherine McDiarmid-Watt | Saturday, September 29, 2007 | 0 comments

My advice to other older women wishing to have a baby? If anyone tells you that you're "too old to have a baby", don't believe them. Thousands of women, including myself, are testimony to the fact that anyone with a womb, ovaries and a menstrual cycle can indeed become pregnant!

Baby at 46 - Penny Cohen, Guildford, England
After several months trying to get pregnant in 2002 we 'gave up' and left it to fate. I changed my lifestyle from 45 hours work a week to 20 hours/week and lo and behold, baby. We decided not to have any invasive tests and in any case would have been happy with a Down's Syndrome baby (as it turned out Alex did not have DS anyway).

Sherri, 45
A child is a gift of God and should be taken as so. I am a single mom (age 45). My son is a year old now. My pregnancy was a total surprise (I was taking birth control).

I had never planned to have a child, but it is the most wonderful thing that has every happened to me. I was concerned due to my age but my doctors reassured me and I followed their instructions to a "T". I have been a single person for sooooo long and now I have someone to be with and enjoy life with.

I am discovering the world all over again through my son's eyes. Everything is brand new. My son is the LIGHT in my life now. He keeps me busy ( in a good way) and I love it. MY words to older women - don't hesitate and don't be afraid - it is WONDERFUL!

I'm new to this site but just wanted to say I am 43 and got pregnant with my own eggs at 42.5. Although we all know its more difficult as you get older I get really pissed off with the suggestion that having children over 40 is a modern thing when my gran did it in 1922 and 1924 at 41 and 44 and my mum in the 1960's with me at 41. Because of the family history I assumed it would be easy - ha ha ha - it wasn't but I got there.

Another inspiring story - a colleague of mine had her second child at 45, no assistance, just with a lot of patience, good nutrition, and one miscarriage along the way. She swears by (revolting) pumpkin seeds

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost our precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted there will be no more babies in our house.
