It's amazing that 1/3 of women over 40 can get pregnant naturally

Catherine McDiarmid-Watt | Thursday, May 17, 2007 | 0 comments

I think that's amazing that 1/3 of women over 40 can get pregnant naturally. That is pretty interesting, because articles on fertility these past few years have been scaring younger women into thinking they've got to have kids in their 20's (and this includes NYTimes articles!).

They talk about steep declines in fertility, etc., without mentioning there's still a 33% chance of getting pregnant in your 40s! This may explain why one of the top groups of Americans to get abortions are women over 40 --- whoops! can't cope with that surprise! (the other top group is teenagers)

If more people knew that 33% of women over 40 can get pregnant naturally, perhaps they'd be more careful!

One woman who had her first child at the age of 49 years

Oldest woman to menstruate:
The onset and termination of menstruation is subject, like all other sexual phenomena, to immense variation. The menopause rarely occurs after the age of fifty-five but rare cases do occur. In one instance menstruation was continuing in a woman aged 104.

A 44-year-old woman from Telsiai, western Lithuania, gave birth to her 18th child, a miracle doctors said they do not see often.

According to Lithuanian daily newspaper Lietuvos Zinios, Danute Bagociene was highly concerned over her 18th pregnancy and feared it would be difficult for her and the baby. Nevertheless, the baby boy weighted 3.7 kilograms at birth and was heavier than Bagociene's other newborns. Bagociene has given birth to seven sons and 11 daughters. Her oldest son Irinijus is now 28.

3/12/2003 - Twins were delivered by Caesarean section in Nahariya on Saturday to Samira Elias, 58, now the oldest woman in Israel to have had children.

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost that precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted that there will be no more babies in our house.
