About 5 babies conceived every day in women over 50

Catherine McDiarmid-Watt | Monday, May 14, 2007 | 0 comments

"A lot of perimenopausal [women] are unaware of the facts surrounding pregnancy during menopause. More than 60% of unintended pregnancies in women over 40 are aborted."Source: http://www.epigee.org/menopause/pregnancy.html

So if the babies born were only 40% of the total conceived, doesn't the above study show that about 1,350 babies could have been conceived by women over 50 between 1997 to 1999???

Or maybe even more, because the risk of miscarriage is supposed to be something like 90% - so if that 539 live born babies was only 10%, then perhaps something like 5,390 babies were conceived by women over 50!!

Which would make about 5 babies conceived every single day in women over 50! The vast majority of them, without medical assistance.
"Chances of pregnancy are lower in your menopausal years than during your 20s and 30s. By the time you are 40, your chances of becoming pregnant naturally are reduced by 50%. This percentage continues to decline the older you get. However, you are not completely infertile until your periods have stopped for at least one complete year. In fact, two-thirds of women between the ages of 40 and 44 ovulate regularly during perimenopause."Source: http://www.epigee.org/menopause/pregnancy.html

My neighbour had her first, a boy, at one month away from 46. He is the light of her life & she is as active a mom as you will see. complete with great throwing arm while playing baseball in the front yard.

My sister-in-law's sister had an “oops” at 45, her youngest was 10. A big surprise, but she loves the family dynamics with her new son, now 2.

I had my first at 42 (ICSI / PGD) and, hope to give birth to my second when I've just turned 45 in July (again ICSI / PGD). It was a very long and a times painful journey and I know I'm incredibly lucky but just wanted to post to say that it can sometimes happen and not always with donated eggs.

A friend of mine became a second-time mother after IVF at 47 (own egg). Boy, was she persistent.

Catherine

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost our precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted there will be no more babies in our house.
