If you are healthy, still ovulate & want to have a baby... you can

Catherine McDiarmid-Watt | Tuesday, February 13, 2007 | 1 comments

Question: I am 45 and my partner 46 and both would like to have a baby but would like to know if this age is considered to be too old. We both have children from previous marriages but would like one of our own.

Dr. Answers: If you are healthy, you still ovulate, and want to have a baby... you can. It is true that there is an increased risk of creating a genetically damaged baby at 45 years, but not always. If you want to conceive, you can begin trying.

Phone Consult with Dr. Sher: Then he went on to say he just had success with a 44 year old this very week and said his oldest with their own eggs gave birth at 49. Yea!

Dr. Sher is not exactly correct about the UK. Obviously women over 42 get pregnant through IVF here (I got pregnant at 44.5 in the UK). And there are IVF births here up to age 45/46.

I had my 8th baby in Oct. at age 44... They keep me young, and I feel no different then I did ten years ago. Family is shocked, and almost critical each time I announce another pregnancy.

I had my first baby a beautiful little girl Jan 5th 2005. No problems at all. She started walking at 9 mos. She's smart as a tack and very feisty! Her favourite show is the Wiggles, and she loves to dance. I am 47. I would love to have one more if I God thinks it's right.

If your healthy and have a good genetic history have your baby and be happy - to h*&# with what anyone else says! I am very proud of mine and wouldn't take anything for her!

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost our precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted there will be no more babies in our house.

I believe if your are healthy, a woman can conceive via IVF or naturally. I also think if you want a baby later in life-GO for IT! I conceived via IVF at 44 and 46 years old. My FSH was under 8 and I had a good response to the fertility medication. Acupuncture might have helped as well. Anything is possible with perseverance, a little luck, good medical care, and God in your corner.
