At 48 she was clearly in menopause, but discovered she was pregnant

My grandmother had 5 children by the time she was about 35. At 48, she was clearly in menopause but discovered she was pregnant. She didn't even tell anyone she was pregnant because she didn't realize it until she was about 6 months along. Her missed periods were nothing odd and the weight gain she put down to age. Anyway, she had her last son at 48 years old and he weighed 11lbs 10oz at birth. He is 5 years older than me and 21 years younger than my mother who is the second oldest in the family. So, obviously it is very possible to get pregnant during menopause without the aid of drugs.

That is great to hear -- especially coming from your Dr. My OB is the same way which helps tremendously. He has numerous women in their late 40's and always tells me that.

I got pregnant naturally at age 42 (miscarriage) and 43 (with a successful birth one month before I hit 44). My dr. never had the discussion with me about anything other than me getting pregnant naturally.

My cousin delivered twins at 44 with no problem (her first pregnancy)...

I have two wonderful o.b's my one Dr C just had her first baby this past Aug at age 43. Today we were talking and I asked her if she was planning on another baby she told me she had YEARS of infertility problems and was being realistic that she may not have another but if she could she would love to try again in a few months that was so nice to hear. She had never given me that old egg talk.

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost our precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted there will be no more babies in our house.
