I'm 8 weeks along at age 46 - a total accident

Catherine McDiarmid-Watt | Friday, March 24, 2006 | 0 comments

Hey everyone, can't believe I'm writing this. I'm 8 weeks along (6 weeks gestation) at age 46... for the first time. It was a total accident, unexpected, all that-- and yet it's an absolute miracle I'm going to see through.

Unexpected pregnancy at 47 - Found out I'm pregnant on 6/1. At this point, it's been 8 weeks since my last period. My husband is shocked and appalled - this was definitely not planned. My daughter is seven (will be eight in December) and my husband is not really entertaining the idea of another - I have mixed feelings.

Following her first pregnancy at age 47, award-winning cookbook author Martha Rose Shulman teamed up with Jane Davis, an obstetrician/gynecologist who loves to cook. The result is "Every Woman's Guide to Eating During Pregnancy"

I know that it can happen because my Father was born when his mother was 47

My husband and I had been married a little over a year when we conceived, but it was still a surprise (44!!). We told our parents and a very few others at first - waited on anyone else until after the first trimester (though after about two months, my husband just couldn't contain himself any longer - there were a lot of young guys at his work who were also expecting.)

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost our precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted there will be no more babies in our house.
