I am so astounded - 49 & 7 weeks pregnant.

I am 49 and 7 weeks pregnant. I am so astounded that this could happen! I have only been having 2-3 periods per year for the past 3 years. I even had hot flushes. I went to a country wedding where I met up with a lot of old high school mates and what with the alcohol, high spirits and so on, I ended up spending the night with my high-school sweetheart. He's as surprised as I am.

There are a lot of ladies your age [49] that have normal pregnancies. I know a little about how you feel because my mother is always telling me how freaked she was when she found out she was pregnant with me going into menopause .

In a remarkable 1674 case in Germany, pregnant 48-year-old Anna Mullern went into labour but the pains lasted seven weeks, says Bondeson. When they ceased, her belly remained swollen. Anna recovered, and though convinced she was still carrying her first unborn child, went on to bear two healthy children. When she died at age 94, a surgeon discovered in her belly "a hard mass of the form and size of a large Ninepin-Bowl." The lithopedion was taken before the Royal Society of London. [Lithopedion - A "stone baby," from a tubal, ovarian or abdominal pregnancy where the fetus is never expelled and becomes calcified]

I'm 47 and pregnant for the sixth time (the child was conceived naturally). I have four children from my first marriage, ages 16-22. If it helps, when I was in my 8th week (I'm now in my 9th), I had an ultrasound and a good fetal heartbeat was detected and everything was right on target.

I have a family friend who had her first 2 children at 47 and 49 and they're perfect! This should be a time of happiness - don’t let a doctor put a damper on this moment!

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost our precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted there will be no more babies in our house.
