We both believed I wouldn't conceive at 47.

After several months of trying to convince my husband, he reluctantly agreed to not use birth control. That was about a year ago. I think we both believed that I wouldn't conceive again especially at 47. I know I still have a lot of hurdles to overcome with this pregnancy. The hardest one already has been becoming pregnant.

This morning in a play group I met a woman with triplets through IVF. She said that there is a 49 year old with twins in her multiples group who got pregnant naturally at 49! Also, a friend of mine worked as a nanny a couple of years ago for a woman who had twins at 50! She told my friend that no-one believes she used her own eggs, but she got pregnant completely naturally. She said it must have been her very last good egg.

A 52-year-old who became a grandmother last year has given birth to triplets, baffling doctors in Naples who say the likelihood of such a case is "one in a billion". Gabriele, Alessio and Nunzia were born several weeks early and were reported to be in good condition despite weighing just 1,7kg, 1,5kg and 1,1kg respectively. The woman insists she did not undergo any fertility treatment, but doctors remained unconvinced. Mamma Mellone said her family had a history of "mature" pregnancies, with a cousin giving birth to her fourth child at the age of 51.

I have four children, daughter (17), daughter (16), son (12) and daughter (21 months). My daughter was conceived naturally at age 44 and I was 45 when I gave birth to her. It was a long time to conceive her as you can see from the age difference.

I used to be on the TTC board, but we gave up a year ago and decided we were completely content with our 11-year old son. Well, lo and behold, last Friday I got 2 positive HPTs. I only took the tests after my husband asked if I could possibly be pregnant... I told him I couldn't be, but I would do the test anyway. Needless to say, I've been in a fog since then, because I had completely put this out of my mind and these results have thrown me for a loop. Yesterday was my first doctor visit and all is well. I will be 44 when the baby is born!

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost our precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted there will be no more babies in our house.
