Just four weeks ago, Elizabeth Adeney provoked a storm of controversy by becoming Britain’s oldest mother at the age of 66. And now she has risked further criticism – by rushing back to work.

The wealthy businesswoman returned to her job as managing director of a plastics company last week, leaving little Jolyon in the care of a live-in nanny.

But a source close to Ms Adeney, who is single and divorced, said: ‘When she makes up her mind about something, that’s it – and nothing will persuade her otherwise.’

"I've waited for a baby for so long, I'm so happy," a woman who became the proud mother of a firstborn son at the age of 60, said today.

The woman went into premature labor about three weeks ago. She was hospitalized in an attempt to stop the early delivery, but soon after that doctors had no choice but to deliver the baby, which came into the world in the 34th week of pregnancy and at 4.29lbs.

Newborn twins can be daunting for any mum, but for Liz Addy the 3am feeds and nappy changes are an even greater challenge - as she's 52.

But despite becoming a first time mum to Thomas and Sophie later in life, Liz doesn't regret a thing, and she hasn't ruled out having more kids.

"Looking after twins is just a different challenge," says Liz, "I've had tremendous adventures in my life, but this is the most exciting and awesome thing.

"I always hoped I'd be a mother but I didn't meet the right man, so until my late 40s it looked as if I wouldn't have children after all."

Britain's oldest mother brought her baby home for the first time yesterday.

Elizabeth Adeney, 66, looked radiant as she lifted her son lovingly out of her car.

She is reported to have named him Jolyon - which means 'young at heart'.

They were discharged from Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge yesterday afternoon and picked up by a female friend and another woman, believed to a nanny, in Mrs Adeney's car which was recently fitted with a child seat.

The wealthy businesswoman smiled broadly as she gently carried her little boy, who appeared to have a tube coming from his nose, into her £600,000 detached house in the Suffolk hamlet of Lidgate.

It was a moment she has dreamed of for most of her adult life.
