We conceived without medical help at 46

Catherine McDiarmid-Watt | Monday, June 16, 2008 | 1 comments

I wanted to let you know it is possible. I come back and visit at times to give encouragement.

I was TTC [trying to conceive] in 2002, and in July 2003 gave birth to a beautiful baby boy when I was 46 years and 11 months old, so there is hope.

We also had been married for 5 years, and decided to try to have one of our own (I had a son 28 from a previous marriage, who will be giving me my first grandchild in June).

We conceived naturally without any medical help, the doctor gave us a 5% chance - but after a year and a half of trying we were surprised, my doctor actually thought I was going through menopause when I missed my period.

Our little miracle is almost 4, and just can't start to describe our lives since he has been born. He is keeping us young by trying to keep up with him. Yes there are a lot of positives and negatives to having a baby in your 40's but if you at considering it you have already weighed them out.

Be prepared for a wonderful whirlwind adventure.

I am 47, and they are wanting to treat me like a lab animal. I had the nuchal translucency, but will not do any invasive testing like amnio [amniocentesis] or CVS [Chorionic villus sampling] .

If the baby is Down's syndrome, I'm going to keep it anyway, so why put the baby at risk with the invasive testing! I am at 20 weeks now.

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost our precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted there will be no more babies in our house.

I agree, why go through those invasive tests when parents plan to keep their child no matter if Down's is a possibility.

Why do doctors push such things!!

O, thank you for being honest about how long it took you to conceive.

Eighteen months may see like quite a long while BUT really it is NOT.

    God Bless!
