Friend of mine had her 2 boys at 42 & 45

Catherine McDiarmid-Watt | Thursday, June 05, 2008 | 3 comments

Having said that, a friend of mine had her two boys when she was 42 and 45 -- without ANY assistance. ???? (Well, she had assistance, but it never worked, then she conceived -- every time she did conceive -- without assistance.)

She started trying to get pregnant at age 38 and she had lots of miscarriages on her way to pregnancy number 1. But the pregnancies themselves were uneventful and the babies were healthy, full-term, normal babies. I guess she's a statistical freak.

My grandmother had her first child in 1939 at age 45, and a second child (my mother) at 48. So I know it is possible, but I know it's rare.

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost our precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted there will be no more babies in our house.

    Hi Catherine,
I went to the doctors for an annual Pap and checkup last week and discovered that instead of beginning menopause as I thought, I am pregnant! I'm 51 and my boys are grown, 27 and 25. I'm now 11 weeks and have not had a single symptom of nausea or any problems aside from a bladder infection. I had morning sickness with my first son and was queasy with the second but never actually got sick. All I'd have to do was smell coffee. This time I drank coffee every day and I feel as healthy as I ever have. This was totally unexpected but we are rejoicing and trusting in the Lord to take care of this precious gift He has given us. The only instances of pregnancies over 50 I've found are with donor eggs. My doctor said his oldest patient he delivered was 44 so I am his oldest pregnant patient. He said I am healthy and does not think my age will be a problem in this, but he is worried about genetic problems. We do not believe in abortion so have ruled out amniosyntesis.
Do you know any other cases of women over 50 who have given birth to healthy babies besides Elisabeth and Sarah in the Bible?
God has His own timing! His ways are higher than ours.
    ~Susan

Thanks, Catherine. I'll check back in with you as the pregnancy progresses. I looked through our genealogies and 41 is the oldest age I found so far of a mother having her last child.
