NAPLES, Italy, Feb. 7 (UPI) -- An Italian woman has given birth to twins about 18 months after going into menopause, doctors said.
Adele Dramis, 53, had been trying to have children since she was married at 45, the ANSA news agency reported. She gave birth Wednesday with the assistance of fertility treatment in clinics in Italy and elsewhere, the report said.
Dramis suffered several miscarriages before conceiving in July 2007, about a year after entering menopause.
Doctors called the event "a triumph." Fabio Sirimarco, the chief gynecologist of Cardarelli Hospital in Naples -- who has been treating Dramis -- told ANSA, "We are at the limits of natural possibilities."
Doctors said the twins -- a boy and girl -- were doing well following their delivery by Caesarean section.

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost our precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted there will be no more babies in our house.
