She was pregnant at 46

Catherine McDiarmid-Watt | Thursday, January 10, 2008 | 1 comments

When she was a child, her mother's closest friend had been told that after her first child, she would have no more, due to fibroids, endo, etc. The woman had three more children.

When the fourth was conceived, doctors thought it was a tumor. Only 7 months into her pregnancy did they realize she was pregnant (before u/s technology). She was 46. The child was fine.

My friend the nurse has two friends who recently had babies beyond age 50. Both were "bonus babies," conceived when the women weren't trying. The first friend was 52. The baby was completely healthy.

The second friend called up about 3 years ago, somewhat upset, needing to talk. Just past her 56th birthday, she thought she was in menopause. Her two daughters were in their 20's & 30's.

She suddenly discovered she was pregnant! Her child is now two, and again, very healthy!

Just popping over from the DE [donor egg] board to see how you are all doing and to share an inspirational story. I was reading an old Australian Women's Weekly article (Oct 2006) about Australia's first IVF Quads [in vitro fertilization] who are 22 now.

The story is that Helen and Graham Muir of Perth had the Quads in 1984 following IVF (2nd attempt): 6 eggs fertilised, 2 were irregular and 4 were transferred. She got pregnant with Quads.

The amazing part was that when the boys were 13 and she was 44, she conceived naturally and had a girl.

My father told me when he was young, one of his coworkers said his wife accidentally got pregnant at 51. It obviously was not donor egg, because that did not exist back then!

I am 54 and have a 24 year old daughter, a 21 year old son, and a 9 year daughter... She was a BIG surprise! While having a child later in life is difficult, I believe it's particularly challenging when you've already raised other children.

When the "surprise" baby comes along, you are not the same person/mother you were when the older ones were young and it's not easy to "go backwards".

Yes, in many ways, it is wonderful to have this surprise child but I would love to hear from other moms in similar situations.

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost that precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted that there will be no more babies in our house.
