Now 6 weeks pregnant at 45

Catherine McDiarmid-Watt | Monday, January 07, 2008 | 2 comments

I conceived at 44, although I miscarried around week 7, and am now 6 weeks pregnant at 45.

Don't give up, you never know! Although I'd recommend reading "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" and cutting way back on caffeine and alcohol (although I didn't!).

I got pregnant with my last child at 43, and turned 44 a month after he was born. I have basically not used birth control since he was 4 months old, he is now 19 months and I am 45.

We have been TTC [trying to conceive], but now I have accepted that Liam is probably my last. He is my fifth child, and was conceived naturally. I wouldn’t seek medical intervention as, if we have another, it is meant to be.

To give you encouragement, I'm 44 and am 7 weeks pregnant after two months of trying. My first was at age 41 (delivered just before I turned 42). My daughter was conceived without trying (in fact, we were using birth control at the time), so it's not impossible.

Just wanted to add... I'm 45, pregnant for the first time! It wasn't getting pregnant at 45 that was hard, it was all the years in between in which it never happened (26 years of infertility, now spontaneously conceived at 45). I will be TTC [trying to conceive] again following this baby's birth.

Of course it happens to us "old" ladies - I'm 45 and that was my SURPRISE. This is my 6th. My youngest son is now 4 1/2. We were NOT trying. My oldest son just turned 20 yesterday.

Do not despair. It is possible.

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost our precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted there will be no more babies in our house.

    God Bless!
I was pregnant last year at 44 and had a miscarriage. I have a suspicion that I am pregnant again but because it is the grey area between last period and missed period...I will just have to wait and see. Ack! Single, unemployed and pregnant at 45. Daunting.

Hi there, I'm 44 and ttc my first child with my new dh. I will be starting fertility testing in a couple of weeks then maybe IVF. I'm just wondering if all the older mums out there getting pregnant in their 40's & 50's are in top physical condition, such as healthy weight and eating habits. I myself need to lose about 30 pounds to be at my perfect weight so I'm worried my weight will be an issue during my treatment in the begining. I do plan on changing my diet and losing weight ASAP. What do you think?
