Nothing wrong with being pregnant at 45

Catherine McDiarmid-Watt | Monday, April 09, 2007 | 0 comments

Older generations had children well into their 40's, and that was OK! There is nothing wrong with being pregnant at 45, if you want this baby. If Nature wanted women stop being fertile at 25 or 35, it would make menopause at that age.

Apparently, before the 60's (before the invention of birth control pill) a woman would keep giving births well into her forties (they'd call the last one the *cherry on top*) and nobody worried that much about the age.

In the 60s, the mantra became "2 and done at 32". It's been over 40 years since, and this new childbearing cut off age have etched deeply into population's psyche. Suddenly, the day you turn 35 you are "advanced maternal age".

If you are pregnant in your forties, you get, overtly or not, the "scary" statistics. If you are pregnant close to 50, god forbid, not even every ob/gyn would work with you. The fact is, the actual percentage of problems is still small on the absolute scale, though it rises comparing to pregnancies in 20's-30's.

Besides, you get to live probably to well into your 90's - there's a lot of time to see your grandchildren.

I know one couple who did the fertility treatment route, resigned themselves fairly happily to childlessness, and then the wife got accidentally pregnant at 45, and they are the happiest parents in the world.

Robin Bradley helps people recover their reason online. After finding out she was pregnant at 45, she decided to quit her job as a personnel director and do something she could handle between nappy changes. So she ended up as an online mediator for SquareTrade, which eBay subsidises to help resolve disputes between users.

I work in a hospital and we had a women deliver a few months ago at age 48, actually I think its pretty common these day for women to have children in their 40's. I see it more and more these days.

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost our precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted there will be no more babies in our house.
