More than 100,000 live births to women over 40 last year

Catherine McDiarmid-Watt | Tuesday, February 06, 2007 | 0 comments

According to the US CDC, there were more than 100,000 LIVE BIRTHS to women over 40 last year, and guess what? Only about 5% were from donor eggs. No kidding! And you can bet that 100,000 would be higher if as many women over 40 were trying, as the 20 and 30-somethings. It takes us longer but I believe many of us can succeed.

In the last few years, we have begun to accept women over 40 for sterilization reversal. Success appears to be about half of the rate for women under 40, with take home baby rates of about 35% for women 40 to 43. There is not enough information to determine pregnancy rates in women older than this. We have seen pregnancy after surgery up to age 46.

The University researchers also are studying the age at which the women had children to determine whether late fertility is associated with longer lives. Studies in fruit flies had shown that the life span doubled for both males and females that had been grown for many generations from the last laid eggs. In the Utah Population Database, they are testing whether the brothers and sisters of women who had their last child after age 46, have a greater chance of living past age 90.

I learned that although scientific studies indicate that fertility takes a dip around age 35, and a larger dip around age 39, every day nearly 1200 babies are born to American mothers between 35 and 44. I found this to be another encouraging piece of information.

In my own family, on both my mother's and father's side by the way, women have had babies in their 40's (my father's mother at age 40, and my mother's mother at age 41 and 45 - and this was in the 1940s, well before any fertility treatments were available of course).

In addition, my mother's sister had an unplanned pregnancy in her mid-40s *after* having been told by her doctor that she had already entered menopause!

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost our precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted there will be no more babies in our house.
