My midwife has a mom who's 7m pregnant & 46.

Catherine McDiarmid-Watt | Thursday, August 17, 2006 | 1 comments

I talked to the midwife I used for all my pregnancies before this one. She said she's had quite a few moms over 40 with no problems. Right now she has a mom who's 7 months pregnant and 46.

I needed to schedule my annual mammogram. I start to tell [the very nice scheduler] that [may need to reschedule] (half expecting a bit of shock or at least noncommittal response, at the age of 44 I'm trying to get pregnant?!?). So I explain that I may need to reschedule because....blah, blah, blah.

She gets ALL excited and starts wishing me all kinds of luck, etc. Shares a story that she used to work in OBG office before there and right before she left there, a patient who had been trying to get pregnant for over 10 years delivered a very happy, healthy baby girl at the age of 46! (all natural....)

I am 20 weeks along and I'll be 49 when my baby is due. This is a spontaneous pregnancy, much to my and my ob/gyn's, surprise! I had my first daughter at 41 and lost my second when I was 42 at 24 weeks. Had two miscarriages between 8 and 10 weeks after that.

At 16 weeks we had an ultrasound done with 3-D imaging it was amazing! My DH and I couldn't stop the tears we could see that it is a boy. We could see he has all three bones in his little fingers (many down's babies have only two) which was a bit of a relief as we have decided not to take the risk of amnio.

I suppose I won't stop worrying until the baby is born. My girls are thrilled and can't wait for their new brother (we are also in the process of adopting our foster daughter). Thanks for listening.

Here is a bit of encouragement - my grandmother had 13 kids, the last being my mom when she was 48. That was in 1945 - way before fertility drugs and doctors. My grandma just did the old-fashioned way with my grandfather. So, you just never know when or where the stork will drop in.

I got pregnant 4 times after embarking on my natural journey and as I got healthier and more hormonally balanced, I finally carried my last pregnancy to term without complications! I was 44 when I had my beautiful daughter who is perfect in every way.

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost that precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted that there will be no more babies in our house.
