I'm glad I'm not the only one having a baby at 44y!

I got a email from an former classmate I went to high school with in Japan, I guess she found me from a website, anyways we're just chit chatting and she wanted to know what I've been up to. (I hadn't seen her since like '77). I said oh I was busy with my kids and a new baby. She wrote back and said she just had a baby on 8/24/05!! I said boy I'm glad I'm not the only one having a baby at my age [44y].

She then told me the story of how her "Kira" came to be. Well, minutes before undergoing a hysterectomy she asked to get her blood work done, she had lab work one week before the scheduled surgery (December) and it was negative, but she had a gut feeling something wasn't right she was supposed to start her AF and it hadn't come yet.

Well, Low and behold, she was pregnant!! She was getting a hysterectomy because of fibroids and heavy periods resulting in chronic anemia. She said, "I guess God had another plan for me." Now she is the proud parent of a beautiful baby girl! I believe she is my age too. How's that for a story??

I asked [my doctor] how old the oldest mother was that he had delivered and he said "45". I'm 43. Oh boy.

I do a lot of family research and have found many incidents in my ancestors of mothers having children very late. Back when my ancestors were having 8-10 children or so, there was a pattern; the first children were spaced a few years apart; then one every two years for 15 years or so. Then longer gaps between, and one or two children very late when the mother was around 45. Usually one or two losses, or a child who dies very young. (Due to disease?)

My point is, that centuries ago, many women had children well into their forties. They were not freaks, nor were all of their children stillborn, miscarried, or handicapped. And they had no access to Clomid and IVF and IUI... It's a shame that we are made to fear pregnancy at our ages, but it is great that technology exists to assist us now.

I got pregnant at age 43 after 6 months trying - all natural - (did use acupuncture though - I believe it helped), and am now 34 weeks pregnant with another healthy boy. I turned 44 in May.

[My parents] had me when they were 40 yrs old (my brother when 44) and have been the best parents ever. A living breathing example, that it is okay to have children late in your forties.

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost our precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted there will be no more babies in our house.
