I am 46 years old and I will be having my baby in late October.

My other children are 22 years old, 17 years old, and 19 months old - all conceived naturally.

I know it seems rare, but it can and does happen.

I truly believe it would be happening much more often if not for the fact so many women (and men) have been fixed.

It alters the statistics of probability.

I am very curious to know the statistics of conception post 45 years old when birth control isn't a factor in the comparative population.

A Pregnancy Diary
There is an excellent book you must obtain - it is called A Pregnancy Diary by Mary Arnold (published by Ignatius Press).

Mary was over 40 years old, and experiencing infertility --- she had been trying to get pregnant for years.

She did eventually conceive -- she had a baby at 42 years old I believe, and another baby at 45 years old.

All naturally.

Also, an African friend of mine says in his country (Cameroon), it is very common for women to continue to bear children way into their 40s and 50s --- naturally.

His own mother continued to reproduce until she was about 50 years old.

Older women naturally conceiving 10-15 years past the average time for US women...

I asked my friend what did he attribute it to?

He said he attributes their excellent reproduction mainly to nutrition!

Their foods are organic, not processed like ours, hardly any sugar/salt, no preservatives/additives in foods, no chemicals (i.e. like the strange chemical Nutrasweet we guzzle in the US), no guzzling pop, etc. etc.

Also, he says their level of stress is different from ours... simple village country living...

Finally, he says all women there know about their fertile biological markers.

So, they know when to avoid and to achieve pregnancies in their cycles!

A lot of American women do not know much about their reproductive systems (i.e. cervix, mucus changes, ovulation changes, etc..)

My secretary at work was born when her mother was 48-years-old.

She refers to herself as a change of life baby.

I'm 47 years old, and just found out I'm pregnant for the first time.

I haven't told my husband yet.

He is happy with his older kids from a previous marriage (as am I, they are great) and prefers no more.

TODAY'S BOOK SUGGESTION:
Image: Girl Walks into a Bar . . .: Comedy Calamities, Dating Disasters, and a Midlife Miracle, by Rachel Dratch. Publisher: Gotham; 1st ed., 1st Ptg edition (March 29, 2012)Girl Walks into a Bar . . .: Comedy Calamities, Dating Disasters, and a Midlife Miracle
by Rachel Dratch

-- Her career at a low point, Rachel Dratch suddenly had time for yoga, dog-sitting, learning Spanish - and dating.

After all, what did a forty-something single woman living in New York have to lose?

Resigned to childlessness but still hoping for romance, Dratch was out for drinks with a friend when she met John.

Handsome and funny, after only six months of dating long-distance, he became the inadvertent father of her wholly unplanned, undreamed-of child, and moved to New York to be a dad.

With riotous humor, Dratch recounts breaking the news to her bewildered parents, the awe of her single friends, and the awkwardness of a baby-care class where the instructor kept tossing out the f-word.

Filled with great behind-the-scenes anecdotes from Dratch's time on SNL, Girl Walks into a Bar is a refreshing version of the happily ever after story proving female comics - like best sellers Tina Fey and Chelsea Handler - are truly having their moment.

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost our precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted there will be no more babies in our house.
