Tuesday 23 January 2001 - The director of a Harley Street clinic which helped a 56-year-old woman to conceive twins accused critics yesterday of wanting a "police state" where people could not plan their own families.

Professor Ian Craft, of the London Gynaecology and Fertility Centre, strongly defended its decision to treat Lynne Bezant, who will become the oldest mother of twins recorded in Britain.

Mrs Bezant and her husband Derek, 55, from Oxfordshire, are expecting the babies in June. They already have three grown-up children.

The Learning Channel is going to have to change the name of "18 Kids and Counting," as the Duggar family announced this morning that they will be welcoming their 19th child in March.

Matriarch Michelle Duggar, 43, appeared on the "Today" show this morning to announce she is nearly three months pregnant. She and her husband, Jim Bob, live in Arkansas with their expansive clan, which ranges from 21-year-old Josh to 8-month-old Jordyn-Grace.

Josh and his wife Anna are expecting their first child, a girl to be named Mackynzie Renee, in October.

Michelle and Jim Bob said they are looking forward to their first grandchild and their next baby with equal enthusiasm.

Loving - Elizabeth Adeney with baby Jocelyn

Tenderly cradling the tiny baby, she looks every inch a doting grandmother.

In fact, this is Britain's oldest mother, out with her new son Jolyon on a shopping trip.

Elizabeth Adeney, 66, and her live-in nanny were spotted browsing Cambridge's high street with the baby.

Mrs Adeney, a divorcee, looked smitten with the son she fought so hard for, as she bottle fed him in a local restaurant.

She conceived Jolyon after travelling to the Ukraine to have IVF, which is banned in the UK for women over 50.

The moment I met Maria del Carmen Bousada, I was entranced. She was tiny, attractive, with delicate skin and lively green eyes that sparkled at the sight of her twin boys doing their best to send the crockery flying. “Here they are, the two whirlwinds,” she said. “I do not know how much time I have left with them.”

When I arranged to film her I wasn’t sure what to expect — a querulous elderly woman, perhaps, overwhelmed by the nappies and noise of infancy? Wrong: on arriving in her flat just a month ago, I found an elegant little chatterbox in a silky blouse and capri pants. As we talked, she bathed her boys, changed them and joined enthusiastically in all the silly games that toddlers play.

It was plain that the twins adored her; it was equally plain that this woman of nearly 70 was incontestably their mother. “I wish they were 18 already,” she told me. “Then I could have seen them grow up.” As they hugged her, I was thinking: surely no one could see these boys and wish they hadn’t been born?

Last week Christian and Pau became orphans. Their mother, who caused a furore in Spain when she gave birth days before her 67th birthday, died on Sunday.

The wealthy businesswoman returned to her job as managing director of a plastics company last week, leaving little Jolyon in the care of a live-in nanny.

"I've waited for a baby for so long, I'm so happy," a woman who became the proud mother of a firstborn son at the age of 60, said today.

The woman went into premature labor about three weeks ago. She was hospitalized in an attempt to stop the early delivery, but soon after that doctors had no choice but to deliver the baby, which came into the world in the 34th week of pregnancy and at 4.29lbs.

Newborn twins can be daunting for any mum, but for Liz Addy the 3am feeds and nappy changes are an even greater challenge - as she's 52.

But despite becoming a first time mum to Thomas and Sophie later in life, Liz doesn't regret a thing, and she hasn't ruled out having more kids.

"Looking after twins is just a different challenge," says Liz, "I've had tremendous adventures in my life, but this is the most exciting and awesome thing.

"I always hoped I'd be a mother but I didn't meet the right man, so until my late 40s it looked as if I wouldn't have children after all."

Britain's oldest mother brought her baby home for the first time yesterday.

Elizabeth Adeney, 66, looked radiant as she lifted her son lovingly out of her car.

She is reported to have named him Jolyon - which means 'young at heart'.

They were discharged from Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge yesterday afternoon and picked up by a female friend and another woman, believed to a nanny, in Mrs Adeney's car which was recently fitted with a child seat.

The wealthy businesswoman smiled broadly as she gently carried her little boy, who appeared to have a tube coming from his nose, into her £600,000 detached house in the Suffolk hamlet of Lidgate.

It was a moment she has dreamed of for most of her adult life.
