A 65-year-old woman from Berlin has become the oldest mother in the world to give birth to quadruplets. 

The intense debate surrounding a very touchy subject.

In a fascinating article that recently appeared in New York Magazine, writer Lisa Miller outlines and ultimately defends the current boom of men and women becoming parents at age 50 and beyond.

The article begins with an anecdote - a couple meets and falls in love when she's 47 years old, and he's 54 years old.

Through a donor egg and her husband's sperm, the woman gives birth to her first daughter at age 50.

Two years later, she attempts to get pregnant again.

This time, she has to be brought out of menopause with hormones before she is able to become pregnant.

Shortly thereafter, she gives birth to her second daughter.

This anecdote is only one of many, and they're on the rise. Birth rates among women ages 45 to 49 have risen 17% in just the past three years alone. Reproductive technology, of course, accounts for this sharp increase.

Juliet Le Page became Scotland's oldest mother when she gave birth at 50 years old.

Having settled down with her husband Richard, who is ten years her junior, Juliet has always been determined to have children.

A quadruplet pregnancy occurred in a woman 51 years of age following oocyte donation and embryo transfer.

Successful pregnancy occurred following two previously unsuccessful attempts.

The patient underwent a selective reduction of her pregnancy to two fetuses at approximately 13 weeks gestational age.

Her pregnancy continued uneventfully and she underwent the delivery of two viable infants at 38 weeks gestational age by Caesarean section.

This case represents the first quadruplet pregnancy to be established in a woman of 50 years of age or older.

It illustrates both the benefits and risks of oocyte donation to women of advanced reproductive age.

August 27, 2007 - For a long, long time she had been longing for a child.

And menopause had overtaken her.

Still, she would not give up.

She feels doubly rewarded now, literally.

On Monday morning, 55-year-old Brinda became the proud mother of two.

Her twins were delivered at a fertility clinic in Chennai, a south Indian city.

She is now probably the oldest woman in India to deliver twins.

Both the baby boys, delivered during the hour-long cesarean section, and their proud mother are in good health, hospital authorities said.

She apparently would be the oldest person to give birth if she delivers successfully.

Concetta Ditessa, a housewife from a Calabrian village in southern Italy, is due to give birth to a boy in August.

She has had no complications, Dr. Raffaele Magli said in a telephone interview from his office in Naples.

We had Eddie late in life. Bruce is 52 and I’m 48 years old.

A 72-year-old woman who has two children and five grandchildren has given birth to twins, making her the world's oldest mother.

Omkari Panwar delivered twins, a boy and a girl, by Caesarean section last week.

I am very happy, Charam Singh, 75, the father of the twins, told ABC News through an interpreter.

Singh was reluctant to speak because he has received negative publicity for his wife's having children at such an advanced age.

Even many people of his village in India's state of Uttar Pradesh haven't supported the decision. Still, he and his wife are happy.

The desire for a male child has always been there, but God did not bless us with a male child, he said of the son who is a product of in-vitro fertilization.

Now, we are very grateful to God, who has answered our prayers.

November 12, 1992 - A 53-year-old grandmother who became pregnant through test-tube fertilization has given birth to twin girls.

The new mother, Mary Shearing, is apparently the oldest woman ever to have given birth to a test-tube baby in the United States.

Dennis Gaschen, a spokesman at Martin Luther Hospital, where the twins were delivered on Tuesday, said the oldest post-menopausal woman in the nation to have delivered a test-tube baby previously was 52.

The Guinness Book of Records lists the oldest mother as a woman nearly 57 1/2 years old who gave birth in California in 1956.

Mrs. Shearing's babies, born 12 weeks prematurely and both weighing less than three pounds, were listed as being in guarded condition today. One was delivered vaginally, the other by Caesarean section.

Mrs. Shearing, who has three children and two grandchildren from a previous marriage, was going through menopause when she was implanted on May 15 with embryos obtained by using donated eggs and sperm from her 32-year-old husband, Don. Hormones were used in the first trimester to sustain the pregnancy.

July 8, 2006 -- A 62-year-old child psychiatrist has become the oldest woman in Britain to have a baby.

The pensioner has spoken of her joy at giving birth to an adorabl baby boy.

Patricia Rashbrook of Lewes, East Sussex, became Britain's oldest mother when her son, known as JJ, was born by caesarean section at Sussex County Hospital, Brighton, on Wednesday.

The healthy baby, weighing 6lb 10.5oz, was conceived after treatment from controversial Italian fertility expert Severino Antinori.

The delighted couple was pictured in the newspaper holding their new son, with his shock of downy black hair, in their arms, and spoke of how much they were looking forward to taking him home.

JJ was conceived through IVF using a donor egg and was the result of the couple's fifth and final attempt at the process, which cost £10,000.

At 29 weeks pregnant with twins, Carole Hobson is — like most expectant first-time mothers — a mixture of ­nervous excitement and apprehension.

This, she admits, has been a difficult pregnancy, and it will be a relief when her babies are born, hopefully, healthy and well.

Carole has suffered severe morning sickness, painful swelling of her legs and, most recently, dangerously high blood pressure.

This week she was hospitalized for five days, and she has been warned by medical staff the twins — not due until February 23 — could arrive any day.

She has been injected with steroids to help her babies' lungs mature if they emerge ­prematurely, and she is taking medication to lower her blood pressure in the hope that she can carry them to 34 weeks when doctors plan a Cesarean delivery.

The risk to her own health is, however, one she is fully prepared to take in order to realize her dream of having children; a dream that has so far cost her more than £20,000.

But that is by no means the most surprising part of the story. For Carole is 58 years old — an age when most women are well past the menopause.

And she is single. Her twins, a boy and a girl, have no genetic link to her whatsoever. They were conceived using donor eggs and sperm.

It may seem a concept that defies nature, but with the help of fertility specialists, rising numbers of women are giving birth to their firstborns at an age when many of their peers are anticipating, or enjoying, grandparenthood.

Ann Maloney, who gave birth to her first baby at 50, is just one example.

She told New York Magazine how she and her second husband, John Ross, who she met when she was 47, conceived using a donor egg within a year of meeting.

Fiona Palin, from Los Angeles, California, who, like Kelly Preston, was 48 when she gave birth to new baby daughter Katherine, is not much younger and also struggled to conceive.

May 8, 2014 -- Sital Das Pal, 60, and Sarbani, 52, had been trying to have a child since they married 35 years ago.

The couple finally became parents on April 29th when Sarbani gave birth to twins.

The process was long and difficult, but the mother and the babies are doing well.

This is the first such case in India, said Ranjit Chakraborty, a consultant gynecologist at Bhagirathi Neotia Woman and Child Care Centre.

The couple from Durgapur had approached the hospital's fertility clinic, Genome.

The woman had her menopause and her husband had low sperm count because of his age, said Rohit Gutgutia, the doctor in charge of the clinic.

A 31-year-old woman was selected as an egg donor. Both she and Sarbani were put on medication.

Once ready, the eggs were retrieved from the donor and semen samples were collected from the husband.

Sperm was injected into the eggs and the embryos transferred to Sarbani's uterus.

After 32 weeks, Sarbani developed pregnancy-induced hypertension and jaundice, which made the doctors perform an emergency Caesarean section.

The baby boys are now in the hospital's special care section.

The birth of our babies was the best moment in our lives, said Sarbani.

A woman's ability to bear a child goes down by half after 40. She cannot bear a child naturally after menopause. Hence, the birth of the twins is special, said Chakraborty.

It is rare for a woman in her 50s to give birth. However, we have to keep in mind the social aspect of bearing children at an advanced age, said city-based gynecologist Bikash Banerjee.
