44y Japanese woman, with 6m baby

A 44-yr-old Japanese woman, who has a 6-month-old baby, told me to eat sweet potato when she knew I am TTC.

ZAHARAH (not her real name), 44, had her last child 11 years ago and didn’t expect to have another child — until she re-married in 2003.

A few months into her second marriage she was delighted to discover that she was pregnant because both she and her second husband wanted a child of their own.

“While it may be true that fertility declines with age, I knew that I was still fertile because my periods were regular.”

Five months into her pregnancy, the doctor advised her to go for a structure test to determine whether the child was developing healthily and she was pleased to learn that her baby was normal.

Happily, on July 13, 2004, she gave birth to a healthy baby girl. Her advice to older mums is not to fret about all the complications of pregnancy and fertility when they are expecting.

I am also trying to conceive #2. I had my daughter at 45 (natural conception) and, even though I know the statistics aren't great at my age, I am trying to conceive again at the age of 47.

I miscarried in August of 2005 when I was 46. No BFP since then. I'm taking supplements and Chinese herbs, and doing accu-pressure on my own. My daughter is now almost 2 1/2, and she is such a great little person!

I am currently pregnant with my fourth child, and I'm 52. My baby is due February 10th, and I will be 53 when it is born. One of my purposes for joining groups like this is to hopefully spread some confidence in other women over 50 who are trying to conceive.

Catherine: Another one to add to your successes over 45! YAY!!

I saw my good friend who is a childbirth educator and doula (an amazing wonderful woman if anyone ever needs the best doula ever in NYC!) on Sunday and she told me that the last birth she attended was a 46 year old woman who got pregnant "by accident".

She had one child who is 15 years old, so she did have one other successful pregnancy. Just thought I would share!

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost our precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted there will be no more babies in our house.
