Pregnancy Rates Soaring in Older Women

Socio-medical trends are giving new meaning to the phrase "dear old mom". Statistics confirm that first-time births to women in their 30s and 40s are fast becoming the norm. The birth rate for women 40 to 44 increased in 1998 to 7.3 per 1,000, a 92 percent increase over the 1981 rate.

I will be 46 in October, and as of today am officially pregnant with my first baby!!

I tried off and on with lots of travel to get to my donor to get pregnant with my best friend (using at home insemination technique). I was 43, but turned 44 by our 3rd try. Then, he bailed on me... long story.

So, after dealing with the disappointment of that I went to my Gyno and asked for a good fertility specialist (and apparently ended up with THE best one in Canada, I have since discovered.)

Everything with me was fine - I ovulated, I had fairly low FSH for my age (8), tubes were open etc, but the IUI's I had in January and February didn't take. I was told it would be a miracle b/c of "older eggs" - they call me an "elderly" patient!! This was devastating - all I kept thinking was why can cats, dogs, squirrels etc. have young, I want to be blessed too. I was on Clomid (100mg), but only had one follicle in Jan and Feb.

Then in March after MommaKath's No. 2 Herbs for Clomid users, and the Clomid, I had FOUR follicles ranging between 10 and 18 mm. I had an IUI March 13 and felt myself ovulating all along the 2 hour drive to get to the clinic.

It is OH SO POSSIBLE!! And, I have a friend in England pregnant at 45 and another friend just had a baby girl at 46!!! ALL with own eggs!! Much good luck!

On April 3, Lorene Walters gave birth to Brooklynn Marie — 6 pounds, 13 ounces of beauty — at CentraState Medical Center in Freehold.

Walters did something else that day, too. At 44, she joined the ranks of a growing number of older women who are having babies.

The baby, whom they call Brooke, was a surprise addition to the family, says the Keyport woman, who has a 21-year-old son, Greg. Her fiance, Steve Rinck, has daughters Tiffany, 12, and Stephanie, 15.

Her mother was 45 when she was born and had brought up 6 children already.

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost our precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted there will be no more babies in our house.
