The oldest I've come across is a woman giving birth at 52

The short answer is that it was rather later in previous centuries than it is now. The reason is that women both started and finished menstruating later: something to do with the quality of nutrition, I believe. So whereas birth in one's 4'0s would now be considered late, it was common in previous centuries, and the oldest case I have come across is a woman giving birth at 52, although that is definitely unusual.

I have a friend who had a child at 45!! Second marriage and all that.... The little girl is now 4 years old, and my friend is always exhausted.

My hubby said to look at the bright side... At least I am not going thru pregnancy at 51 years old (Our friend is, and planned baby at that!)

A dear friend of mine, Mary, had her first child five months ago, and she's 47. She spent a lot of money on fertility doctors and they told her she couldn't conceive.

Well, one day Mary wasn't feeling well, went to the doctor and they gave her the surprising news that a baby was coming! Her health is not the best. She's had cancer and other health problems.

Mary’s baby, David, Jr. is healthy, happy and very spoiled. Mary and her husband are thrilled and feel blessed – along with being very tired. Good luck to you with this decision.

You are not too old until you cannot produce eggs anymore. I was pregnant at 51, to my surprise. I became pregnant very easily up until 47, but that is very different with each person.

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost our precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted there will be no more babies in our house.

Actually quite recently the oldest American woman had twins at 60. The world's oldest mother is or was 66 when she gave birth. See my blog for more info http://oldold.blogspot.com
