My mother had me later in life at 54

Catherine McDiarmid-Watt | Tuesday, April 03, 2007 | 5 comments

My mother had me later in life [at 54]. My sisters were really the ones that raised me. I'm now 55 my mother would have been 109 years old if she would be alive today.

Well, my mother was 44 (going on 45) when I was born.

Is it possible that this woman had no idea that she could conceive? I have a friend who continued with her regular monthly cycle until she was 72 years old! She had no idea that she could still conceive until her doctor began to question her about it. She ended up having an hysterectomy so as not to risk pregnancy at her age.

My mom had me when she was 46, she said that giving birth late in life probably took the edge off of menopause because she didn't experience a lot of the traditional symptoms.

ALSO, a lot of my friends have lost their parents while mine, in their 80s, just bought a mini-van and are driving around the country.

I don't think it goes against nature in that I conceived, naturally, with ease (too easy actually) at 39, 42 and 45, giving birth the last time, naturally and breastfeeding, at the age of 46. I'm tired but no more tired than I hear parents in their 30's claim to be.

Their father is 52 and VERY active with them. They go to parks and beaches and monster truck shows and out to eat, etc.

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost our precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted there will be no more babies in our house.

I´m posting this in encouragement to myself and others over 40 still TTC....

Here in Sweden a much loved tv personality Tina Leijonberg is 15 weeks pregnant with her second child. She is 45 and her boyfriend is 31. She previously has a daughter who is 9. And one of our wellknown tv anchors at Channel 4, Anna Lindmarker, had her third child, a son, when she was 45.

Other Swedish celebrity moms who had their children late are : Annika Falkengren, the Ceo for one of Swdenes largest banks SEB, who had her first child, a daughter, at 42. Marita Ulvskog, top politician within the Socialdemocratic party, who had a son at 43 and Malou von Sivers, tv-journalist, who had her third child, a daugher, when she was 43.

Ellen, 42 (43 this summer...) from Sweden

    Hello Catherine,
I didn't wish to post an announcement too soon. As I have not had a normal menstrual cycle since March 2005 and I am 55.
I am carrying a perfect, healthy and active baby girl due in late September, conceived 100% naturally. (approx. EDD 9/29)
At 18 weeks along, I feel wonderful and we are just ecstatic. My youngest is turning 17 this month. I am planning a home birth, hopefully in a tub of warm of water.
I didn't do anything special to become pregnant except apply The Secret ~~the Univeral Law of Attraction. My last confirmed pregnancy ended in m/c in Dec. 02, and I had several "chemical pregnancies".....my husband and I were TTC since 1998--while I never gave up, we did stop "trying".
I simply convinced myself that this baby was possible and have been so grateful for her presence even before she was conceived. I will keep you updated.
    Debbie

I didn't wish to announce too soon but I wanted to let you know I am 18 weeks pregnant with a healthy, perfect and active baby girl. She is due approx. September 29, 2007. I am 55 and have not had a normal menstrual cycle since March 2005. We have been wanting to have a baby since 1998, I have had several mc's and a number of chemical pregnancies. I never gave up but we did stop "trying"--the miracle for me was applying 'the secret', the Universal Law of Attraction and being grateful for my little girl's presence even before she was conceived.
We are ecstatic, this is a dream come true. I feel wonderful, I love feeling her flutters and my belly is beautiful! I am planning another homebirth.
I hope this gives others encouragement. ALL things are possible when you believe. I will keep you updated.

I found this and thought I would share:

"No I haven't conceived with my own eggs but met a
woman recently that did at 51, it was pure accident.
I thought you may want to know for encouragement. x
