Who says you're too old?

It's not hard to understand the fears surrounding conception. Yes, the statistics show that a woman's fertility declines as she ages, but you must keep in mind that these numbers may have nothing to do with you. In fact, over the last 20 years, births to women over age 40 have increased by 50%.... And in 1991, 92,000 women in the U.S. over age 40 had babies. That number continues to rise. A lot of forty-something women don't realize how fertile they are, which may account for the fact that they are second only to women ages 18-25 in frequency of abortions. Who says your eggs are too old? Furthermore, you should know that the vast majority of babies born to women in their forties are healthy. And in healthy women, the vast majority of pregnancies are completed without a hitch.

All the signs are there that I’m pregnant and I’m excited because this will be my last pregnancy. I’m 44 years old and never get tired of babies. I had tried in vitro unsuccessfully, so I had my eggs (which were fertilized by my husband) frozen, figuring I’d get pregnant after the first year of school. But law school was consuming, so we waited. When I graduated at 45, my husband and I separated. I figured that if I was going to be a single mom, I’d better pay off my loans first — and that’s why I was 51 when I finally got pregnant with Natasja, and 55 when Alexandre came along.

I'm 52 and 21 weeks pregnant, conceived without difficulty. My two sons are grown and have 3 grand daughters. While not without my health problems, I'm healthy and maybe healthier than many younger, all things considered. I too have had some spotting, but have medical reasons for that unrelated to pregnancy, so consider it in that perspective.

We are miracles, that is why there are no statistics for Down Syndrome for 50+ women, because the chance is 0 to get pregnant, you can't figure a statistic based on "0". Needless to say, it's higher but even so, 1:250 or 1:100 still gives better odds of not having a Down's baby, odds are greater for problems for other reasons. My best advise is to stay hydrated, eat well, avoid stress, get lots of rest. - Marie

Last Christmas I was rushed into casualty with pains in my side and was told that I probably have a UTI they asked me to bring a urine sample first thing following morning. After a few hours the Lab rang me at work telling me that I am pregnant.

Well, Shocked isn’t the word, I’ve had my family of three boys age 20,18 and 16 went home in a daze my family was totally in shock we sat in silence almost over dinner. Anyway we started to get used to the idea, I had a CVS test done the results came back, baby normal and its a GIRL, I’m 19 weeks pregnant now and suffering spotting and a little brown blood which is due to a low lying placenta. My family and I are now very happy and excited over this little miracle!! If it can happen to me it can happen to any of you I’m 44 years old and baby girl due August 2004.

I am 44 years old, my husband is 51, and I have BOTH my in-laws living with me (76 and 82). I have two teenage daughters (15 and 11). I am due to deliver in 10 days and have had a problem-free pregnancy, much to my absolute amazement. It can be done!

I did have an amniocentesis done and was a nervous wreck waiting for the results -- the results came back normal but I never want to have to experience those two weeks again when I had to wait for the result. I am going to have a boy, so I am excited. We really do not have the money for this child, but does one ever?

I think there is hope. My sister in law got pregnant 3 months before she turned 46; first time, no infertility testing, nothing. Every doctor gave her a doom and gloom picture. She postponed her ultrasound until after 20 weeks because of the anxiety they caused about the whole thing. Well, she just gave birth to a healthy baby girl. She doesn't know her FSH levels or anything, nor does she even know what that is. So, it is possible I think.

Saw the doctor. He explained it all to me so nicely - he said you're not so young, it is perfectly possible for you to have a baby, right up to your 50's. But, just now, your eggs have forgotten what to do & the Clomid makes you fire out several eggs at a time, in the hope that one of them will get fertilised and remember what to do! I thought this was so nice & logical..

Anyway, what do you know !! I'm 7 weeks 5 days [pregnant]. I know it is way too early to be telling the world etc., but, I'm just so happy & I do feel that this will be ok - I hope so, anyway. First ultra scan showed a little heartbeat (6 weeks 4 days) which is a good sign - Lindy, 45

I never had a child until I was 43, then I have been able to get pregnant again on my third cycle one year later. I had Greyson on Oct 31, 2004, by c-section. We had to wait a year because of that. I went off birth control in July and got pregnant a day before his first birthday this year. I am now 44 and seven weeks pregnant. So it can surely happen.

This was after 21 years of being told I was unlikely to become pregnant. It was all natural as we did not believe in going the infertility route. So, by some miracle, I am living proof it's possible.

Tests showed that my step father's sperm couldn't swim and the count was too low. I think the chance of her becoming pregnant. was one in a thousand chances. (something like that)

My mom gave up her dream of having more children because she couldn't go through any more. It took her 15 to come to terms with this and with God, and guess what.... she got a beautiful, healthy, happy baby girl. She was 45 years old when she was born.

2,650 stories of Pregnancy & Birth over 44 years old!
PAULINE LYON celebrates her 63rd birthday later this month – and is planning to become Britain’s oldest IVF mum.

Pauline and her husband David, 62, have consulted maverick Italian fertility doctor Severino Antinori.

He has agreed to treat Pauline at the same Russian clinic where 62-year-old Dr Patricia Rashbrook conceived after IVF treatment.

Professor Antinori’s only condition is that Pauline gets her blood pressure down.

Each IVF attempt will cost £20,000 to £25,000. The couple are prepared to remortgage their home to pay for it.

Speaking exclusively to Sun Health, Pauline from March, Cambridgeshire, says: “I would love another baby. I don’t think you ever lose the longing to have children.”

David, a lab technician, admits he is terrified of the risks for Pauline, but says: “I will back her all the way.”

Pauline made history in 1995 when she gave birth to Lauren, now 11, at the age of 51. At the time, she was Britain’s oldest IVF mum.

Then four years later, she underwent IVF again to have her son Brodie, now seven.

She is now on medication to reduce her blood pressure and is trying alternative therapies including massage and reflexology in her bid to have another baby.

Pauline says: “Professor Antinori is my last chance. If I can’t get my blood pressure down it’s the end of the line. But I haven’t given up hope.”

Dismissing critics who claim women in their sixties are too old for motherhood, she adds: “Some 60-year-olds are fitter than much younger women.

“I’m on the go all the time and do all the same things that younger mums do.”
A grandmother looks set to enter the record books as Britain's oldest mother following the birth of a baby boy 35 years after her first child.

Welsh farmer Elizabeth Buttle, whose maiden name is Espley, is believed to be 60 years old.

If correct, the miracle mum's age would beat the previous record birth by five years.

Checks by one British news agency at the Family Records Centre in London revealed an Elizabeth Espley was born early in 1937 in the Chester area.

Further checks revealed no-one by the same name was born between 1937 and late 1945.

No fertility drugs

Twice-married Mrs Buttle, whose eldest grandson is 19, gave birth to new arrival Joseph David by Caesarian section at West Wales General Hospital in Carmarthen eight weeks ago.

The mother, who lives on her farm in the west Wales village of Cwmann, near Lampeter, became pregnant without the use of fertility drugs by her partner Peter Rawston, 56.

Talking about baby Joseph, Elizabeth says:
"He is my little miracle and he makes me feel like a young woman again. I feel perfectly well and I don't know what the fuss is about.

"There were no complications and the hospital staff were absolutely marvellous."

"Baby was not planned"

A widow with three grandchildren, Mrs Buttle had a daughter in 1962 with her late husband Tom, who died 10 years ago.

New arrival Joseph, described by his mother as a "lovely, healthy little lad", was born slightly premature.

Elizabeth, who celebrates her birthday next month, said although the baby was not planned, she and her partner had taken no precautions to avoid the pregnancy.

Kathleen Campbell, of Ilkeston, Derbyshire, is entered in the Guinness Book of Records as the oldest woman in the UK to give birth at the age of 55 in 1987.

Single mom who became a banker to raise a large brood reaches golden years. But she's not retiring. She's adopting.

When Kit Cole decided to adopt a baby at 64, her children, all in their 30s and 40s, were anything but enthusiastic.
"They said, 'You're right at a place where you can enjoy all the fruits of your labor. Why do you want to have an infant in your life? You'll never have any rest; you'll have to be dragging him around.' "
Cole saw their logic: A successful investment adviser and banker, she had built companies, developed real estate projects and broken the mold for community financial institutions by offering her customers children's play areas, Internet access and cozy furniture at Tamalpais Bank in Mill Valley, which she founded. It was time to chill. Travel. Spend time with her 11 grandchildren.

All of those arguments might have held sway if the 1-month-old boy, Nathaniel, wasn't the child of Cole's grandniece. "She called me to see if I could help her," Cole says in her spacious home at Strawberry Point in Mill Valley.
"She and her partner, the father, are homeless meth addicts. They live in Sacramento and the county of Sacramento took the child away from them."

I was 44 when I had my daughter who, in my totally unbiased opinion, is perfect. I had a normal pregnancy and normal delivery and I conceived without fertility treatments. Yes, I’m the oldest mom at the playground, but so far, nobody’s asked me if I’m her grandmother. As a matter of fact, I’ve been asked more than once, “Are you having another?”

I needed to schedule my annual mammogram. I start to tell [the very nice scheduler] that [may need to reschedule] (half expecting a bit of shock or at least noncommittal response, at the age of 44 I'm trying to get pregnant?!?). So I explain that I may need to reschedule because....blah, blah, blah.

She gets ALL excited and starts wishing me all kinds of luck, etc. Shares a story that she used to work in OBG office before there and right before she left there, a patient who had been trying to get pregnant for over 10 years delivered a very happy, healthy baby girl at the age of 46! (all natural....)

I am 20 weeks along and I'll be 49 when my baby is due. This is a spontaneous pregnancy, much to my and my ob/gyn's, surprise! I had my first daughter at 41 and lost my second when I was 42 at 24 weeks. Had two miscarriages between 8 and 10 weeks after that.

At 16 weeks we had an ultrasound done with 3-D imaging it was amazing! My DH and I couldn't stop the tears we could see that it is a boy. We could see he has all three bones in his little fingers (many down's babies have only two) which was a bit of a relief as we have decided not to take the risk of amnio.

I suppose I won't stop worrying until the baby is born. My girls are thrilled and can't wait for their new brother (we are also in the process of adopting our foster daughter). Thanks for listening.

Here is a bit of encouragement - my grandmother had 13 kids, the last being my mom when she was 48. That was in 1945 - way before fertility drugs and doctors. My grandma just did the old-fashioned way with my grandfather. So, you just never know when or where the stork will drop in.

Just saw an old friend. She is due with a baby boy any day now. She was 48 in March. It was so GOOD to see her with that big belly...and gave me such HOPE. Her youngest is now 8 and they had been going through some tough times with their oldest child that really made them doubt their parenting, etc. When she stopped having her period, she said that she assumed that that was it, age, etc and that it was kind of adding insult to injury...until her husband suggested a HPT and VOILA, as she put it, a brand new start...

I just had a similar experience. I ran into an old friend this past weekend at an outdoor jazz concert (we can do that in late October in Florida). Anyway, my friend was carrying a bundle all wrapped up -- a precious one-month old baby.

She laughed and said one weekend she and her husband had a weekend fling when they were momentarily reunited (they aren't separated marriage-wise, but job-wise -- they work in different states right now; it's this economy, you know) and her baby girl was the result. She said for awhile she thought she was approaching menopause and then figured out she was pregnant. She's about my age - 44. She was doing nothing to conceive. It wasn't even on her radar. Sometimes (perhaps all the time) it's about luck. - Jennifer

I got married for the second time at age 43, I have two teenagers from my previous marriage. My new husband and I took romantic honeymoon to Mexico. While we were hiking through some ancient ruins I became very nauseous. We went back to the hotel to rest, but I still didn't feel well for the rest of our trip. When we got home I took a home pregnancy test just to rule that out -- I didn't think I was pregnant... But much to my surprise it was positive. My husband is thrilled, this baby is his first. I submitted a debate Hot Board suggestion to iVillage, and they've created it yesterday!

Do you think that a woman should always have the right to decide whether she's ready to face the challenges of motherhood, no matter how old she is?
Should doctors always assist women in becoming pregnant, regardless of their age? Or do you think doctors and society have the right to just say no because of the potential risks and costs? How old is really too old to become a mother?

My Mum was 45 in 1966 when she gave birth to identical twin girls. (I'm one of them)! She was working as a midwife at the time, and carried to term - we were 6 pound each! Dad was, wait for it, 62! They also had a 10 year old daughter.

By all accounts we were beautiful, healthy babies, complete with golden curls. Our parents had enough energy for us all, and were always there for us. Because their working days were over when we were born, they had plenty of time for us all! Even in the teenage years, they listened to all our woes and supported us. They saw & enjoyed 10 grandchildren. Dad died 3 years ago at 98, and Mum 18 months later at 82. They kept good health pretty much all their lives. Many of our friends lost their parents before we lost ours. We all adored them.
