Grandma delivered healthy *Twins* at 52 - au natural

I started back to work yesterday doing my yearly stint of taxes... Anyhow, I was discussing TTC with my boss and she said NEVER give up hope. Her Grandma delivered a healthy set of *Twins* at the age of 52 au natural. She was shocked needless to say but she was very happy as well.

I have twins sisters, aged 45. One has had IVF 6 times since the age of 40 which has produced 2 children, one at age 40 and the other one a week before her 45th birthday. The problem was her husband's sperm - he'd had a vasectomy years before and it wasn't a successful reversal. She also has a twin sister who gave birth aged 21 and then at 44! She didn't do IVF and when she tried to get pregnant with the last baby, had only just started trying!

I just got a phone call from a friend, she is 47.5 announcing that she is 6 months pregnant!!! She has been trying for #2 for years and was told by her OB that with an FSH of 25, she should forget it. Well, here she is pregnant on her own with a healthy baby.

This is definitely not a DE (donor egg) baby.

I know a lot of women who have had babies in their mid and late forties and I know they didn't do donor egg because:

a) they don't have that kind of money
b) they don't accept it on religious grounds
c) they already have several children and didn't necessarily want or "need" another one. I think that many people find it hard to believe that older women can get pregnant and have healthy babies because our RE's have convinced us that everyone's ovaries shut down at age 42. Not true!

I am always inspired by these stories. Incidentally, I was at my dentist last week and the dental assistant and I were talking. She told me about a patient of theirs who had her last child at 54. When I started asking questions, I found out that this patient is now 90 years old and this birth occurred 36 years ago. This was definitely her OWN eggs, since donor egg didn't exist back then.

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost our precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted there will be no more babies in our house.
