My grandmother was nearly 50 when she gave birth

Catherine McDiarmid-Watt | Wednesday, July 04, 2007 | 0 comments

It is not ‘new’ for an older woman to have a baby. My own grandmother was nearly 50 years old when she gave birth to a very bouncing baby weighing fourteen pounds.

My Mom said that when she was a kid in England, women were always having children up to 50! It just happened, and they called them change of life babies! My Mom is 81 now.

Yes, I wish someone would do a definitive study on pregnancies over 40 pre birth control pills. I think it would be very encouraging! As I have said before, my sister's mother-in-law had her last perfectly healthy child at 50 - around 40 years ago.

I was at the park this afternoon with the kids, and was chatting to a woman who had a baby about Dane's age who was also pregnant again... I of course, had to ask her age and she was 46 as well..... A fire-fighter to boot !!

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost our precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted there will be no more babies in our house.
