I don't regret having a baby at 57, reveals Britain's oldest first-time mother a year after giving birth

I know there are people who will always think I was selfish to have a baby at 57, but Freya couldn't be more loved or cared for, and people live longer these days, don't they?

There is no reason why, if I stay healthy, I shouldn't live to reach my 80s or 90s and see her into adulthood, says Susan, who turns 59 in October.

I remember once going to a mother and baby club, shortly after Freya was born, and another mother said rather nastily to me: Do you know when she's 12 and starting secondary school, you'll be 70? says Susan.

I replied, rather sharply, Yes, I know that, thank you very much - I can add up.

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost our precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted there will be no more babies in our house.

Interesting blog you have there. Just curious, why age 44 and not other number?

  2. I picked age 44 because when I started collecting these stories, I kept reading that it was impossible for a woman to get pregnant over 44 years old. So I started collecting stories to prove it was possible.
